Absolutely Loved it!!

Just got back last night from a 3 night break in Prague. Stayed at the Maximilian hotel.

We had a truly wonderful time and it%26#39;s now our favourite destination for a European city break.

We did all of the cheesy tourist stuff; Paid over the top prices for drinks at the cafes in Old Town Square, stood gawking at the clock on the hour and gazed in awe of St Vitus Cathedral etc........ and absolutely loved all of it. I like to just scratch the surface on a first visit, and if I like a place enough, will go back and really delve in. I%26#39;ll definately go back to Prague.

For all those recent posts complaining about the attitude of the locals.....either you got unlucky or possibly need to address your own attitude; We HONESTLY didn%26#39;t come across a single rude, surly or miserable person during our entire trip. Everyone was lovely to us and each time we were pleasantly greeted by a waiter, receptionst or the like, we were almost suprised at how nice they were after reading the negative comments on here.

I thoroughly recommend Da Nicos restaurant and wine bar on Dlouha. Really lovely atmosphere and service from both the manager and wait staff - as well as great italian food. We%26#39;d often stop for a couple of glasses of Valpolicella and some yummy olives on the way back from some hard sightseeing as it was only a minutes walk from our hotel.

Also ate at Kampa Park......had an enjoyable meal. It wasn%26#39;t the %26quot;be all and end all%26quot; I%26#39;d imagined it to be, but the presentaion, quality of ingredients and views were very good. I think we%26#39;d have had a much better experience if we dined in the main restaurant rather than the riverside terrace.......if you are going for the views, go to the terrace, if you are into Fine Dining, go to the main restaurant,(and if you%26#39;re lucky, you%26#39;ll get one of the few tables which still has great views of Charles Bridge anyway).

If anyone wants to know anything in more detail just let me know.

Sitting here at my desk at work is pretty depressing, especially seeing as this time yesterday, I was sitting outside Cafe Italia in Old Town Square drinking a delicious hot chocolate (with rum in it!).

Thanks to all those who put up with my tedious questions prior to our trip, but they really did help me plan a great break in Prague.

To all those yet to go: Have fun, enjoy it, relax, make it what you want it to be, and you%26#39;ll be just fine.

we have another converted!!!!

glad you enjoyed it, can%26#39;t wait to get back for New Year myself.

I also have to admit that I%26#39;ve stopped posting so much on here due to the negativity and attitude. I think people have to accept that its a different way of life and get on with it.

Sarah , I never thought you would let other people put you off giving your opinion, just think of all those that we and the experts have played a part in their conversion!!!! Hope you and yours are well.. 4 weeks tomorrow and we will be there!!!!!!

I know Torii, I don%26#39;t love Prague any less, I%26#39;m itching to get back not been since Sept 2005 (concentrated effort to go elsewhere and its been hard). Although at the time I decided to leave here every other post was Prague-bashing and slagging off the Czech people, I spent too much time in defence, and that became a reason to stop coming here, I dont like arguing.

Thanks Lisa...I am in Germany right now and have a 10 pm flight tonight for Prague...I have never been and will use your recommendations. I made reservations at Kampa %26lt;park several weeks ago on the interet so will make sure we get into the main diningroom. We have 4 dayzs there and then its back to the US for me.

Hi all and thanks for your replies,

Dusko, I saw schnitzel on a couple of menus over the course of the weekend....most of the restaurants have the menu printed outside so you can always check before you go in.

I am a research freak so pretty much planned an itinerary for each day and got all the info I needed from guide books and the internet, so I felt we didn%26#39;t need a guide. If you are just arriving %26#39;unprepared%26#39; then a guide may be good to make sure you get the most out of Prague. Plus I%26#39;m sure they can give you some inside info on certain attractions that the guide books don%26#39;t. But with that said, I prefer to be my own guide - just depends on you preferance.

We did have a taxi booked via our hotel to pick us up from the airport. It was expensive at 780 kc, but we liked the thought of walking out of arrivals and having the drivier there holding a sign with our name on it - very convenient. We also heard some %26#39;horror%26#39; stories of rip off taxi drivers and didn%26#39;t want to have to deal with anything like the minute we arrived. (Well, that was the plan anyway)!

Unfortunately, our pre-booked taxi driver decided not to turn up - the hotel used the rather lame excuse that he had accidently picked up another couple, on the same flight, staying at the same hotel with the same surname. Too much of a coincidence for me I%26#39;m afraid and they would have got alot more respect if they%26#39;d just admitted messing up. Soooo, we had to get a normal taxi. Walked out of the doors, got approached by the Yellow AAA taxi representitives. They asked us which hotel we were staying at and quoted a price of 420 kc, maximum 460 kc if there was traffic. There was a fair bit of traffic but we arrived at the hotel within about 25 minutes, and paid 450kc. No problems at all and throroughly recommend AAA Yellow taxis based on our experience.

KG, I also made reservations at Kampa Park via their website and had no problems. No doubt the terrace is very quaint and romantic, but for me, the main dining room looked far more comfortable and more in line with enjoying some great food and wine.
