Location Zubateho?

Hi

I%26#39;m a little confused and would appreciate some help. RyanAir has the location for apartments called ZUBATEHO, ZUBATEHO 11, PRAGUE, CZECH REP East of the River and South an area called Stare Mesto

Viamichelin Maps have Zubateho 11 West of the river and South of an area called Mala Strana.

These apartments I%26#39;m told belong to the Old Town Group

just checked my map and the street is on the west side of the river.It is near the border of the Mala Strana district and the Smichov district.The Andel metro station is a couple of hunderd yards to the south.I hvce stayed in the Smichov area before and there are great tram links to the city centre,but from where you are I think walking to the city centre is not out of the question the 6,9 %26amp; 12 trams go past the end of the street and take you to various parts of the city centre.

beware. Ryanair don%26#39;t fly to Prague. they fly to Brno, 3 hours and 200 miles away

Motorcycle Stores in Prague

Hey all,

Lots of good info here, so thanks. I%26#39;m looking for motorcycle stores i.e. Leather jackets, boots, etc.

Is there any in Prague? Also I%26#39;m thinkning of staying one nigt in Hostel Sophie, then meeting some friends at the Marriot downtown, any one comment on the Marriot downtown? Is this a far walk from the hostel?

The Marriott is a very nice hotel in the center, near Namesti Republiky. It is about a 15 minute walk from Miss Sophie%26#39;s.

Sorry, I don%26#39;t know any motorcycle shops.

Or you can play a trick and say it is Nadrazi (which is not cheers, but %26quot;station%26quot;). When I arrived many years ago, I was toasting station with every beer (because someone had told me to do so) for at least a month before some kind local corrected me

Guided Walks

A couple of recent posts have made mention of walking tours. Is there anything in Prague that is similar to London Walks where a group of people show up for cost of 6 pounds each.

Any suggestions on who or where to look for a walking tour guide %26amp; costs. I would prefer a small group but would also consider a private guide for a couple.

I am going to Prague next week and have found several websites regarding walking tours. Though my aim is to include Prague pubs, these organizatins offer general tours as well - please try these;

Prague Walks - www.praguewalks.com They offer pub tours as well as Jewish Quarter, Prague Castle and several comprehensive jaunts around Prague - including a %26quot;Ghost Tour.%26quot;

Another option is through www.pragueexperience.com. They allow you to book a tour online. The average cost runs around 450 CZ.

www.praguer.com (city walks) is another company.NeedPivo I used them for the pub tour.I wouldn%26#39;t say the actual pub tour was great ,you could do them on your own ,but you do get to meet up with a crowd of like minded people and it is worth the fee just for that.I have used Prague experience before and found them to be excellent.

Martin tours also get a very good name on this forum.

All the walks go from the astronomical clock in the Town Square (you can%26#39;t miss it). The guides stand in a line holding coloured umbrellas, a different colour for each company. There are plenty of leaflets around (starting from the baggage hall) describing a multitude of walks and at most times of the day.

We went on two last week and in both cases we were the only people to turn up. The guides were great. I understand they have to pass a guides exam and were certainly keen to answer the questions. We also got some good advice on what to eat and the best beers from our philosophy student guide. We tried them all!

We thought they were great value for money and can recommend a %26quot;communist walk%26quot;, not because it is particularly senic, but because it gives some insight into what life was like behind the Iron Curtain. Not many places you can do that?

Where to buy Cyrstal

Hi,

We are going to be visiting Prague early December but only for two dats. My friend really wants to buy some Crystal and as we will nothave that much time I would be grateful ifanyone could recommend the best place/es to go. WEa re stating in a hotel near Wenceslas square.

there are many crystal shops along celetna street and also a good bohemia crystal shop halfway along na prikope street. However, you can buy the same for less if you go to the Kotva department store on namesti republiky - all within 15 minutes walk from the foot of Wenceslas Square

Hotel in December

We are traveling to Prague in Dec 17-15, our son is at Czech Tech we have 3 people and have to get to the airport at 630 Am on the 25th. I want to stay in a safe area or with easy access to the School and metro to travel. We are considering going on the train for day trips but will not decide until we are there. The diplomate is next to the school but only has room with two twins?

getting bus tickets to Cesky Krumlov

A group of 6 of us wants to go to Cesky Krumlov from Prague in the morning on Saturday August 6, returning to Prague on Sunday. I heard the bus was the best way to go. Any tips on how to do this? should we buy tickets in advance? are there multiple bus stations? anything about the buses themselves we should know?

An additional question...are there bathrooms on buses that go to the towns outside of Prague?

Buses go from Florenc direct, but stops at a number of places on the way. Journey takes about 3.5 hours. On a Saturday and especially on a Sunday, it would be recommended to book a seat on a bus in advance leaving at a specified time (although booking a seat means you sit anywhere, not just on a specified seat).

Most buses in the Czech Republic do not have toilets (although there is usually a toilet stop in Ceske Budejovice on the way). Beware also that some of the locals prefer spending their money on beer rather than on deodarant, and so on some routes when it is hot, the journey may be testing, and unlike on a train, it is much more difficult just to go and sit somewhere else

If you want to look at the times, go to www.idos.cz, click on the union jack at the bottom of the page, on the next page, click on Combinations - Busses and search for buses from Prague to Cesky Krumlov and back.

Why not go by train?

It%26#39;s 3 and a half hour and much more comfortable than riding a bus. You will get reduction with a group of 6, also can use 1st class as train travel is extremly cheap.

You don%26#39;t need reservations for any train, if you get on the train a quarter hour before departure, you will have your own compartment...

I think the trains all require a change, and don%26#39;t go direct. So, I think they actually are pretty slow. The schedule you referenced showed both trains and buses, but I saw no direct trains all the way to Cesky Krumlov.

Train is more comfortable than taking a bus, as noted in my previous reply above. All trains to Cesky Krumlov require a chnage at Ceske Budejovice, but Ceske Budejovice station is not large and the change is relatively straightforward. Journey time is almost 4 hours, as opposed to almost 3.5 hours by bus, so there is not too much difference. The bus station though is much nearer Cesky Krumlov centre than the train station.

Buses have those little air conditioning nozzles above your head - not real airconditioning as such. Most trains are not airconditioned. In addtion, if you are in a first class compartment, you can generally open the top window to let air in if it becomes too stuffy.

Prague has a lot dryer air than DC with less humidity, so unless it becomes really hot, air conditioning is not so much of a necessity

Snow in early November in Prague is unusual. It can though snow on the mountains. Currently, it is a chilly 13 degrees.

5 star hotel break

I%26#39;ve been brousing on and off for the last 2 weeks looking for a 5 star hotel in Prague for a romantic 4 day break towards the end of November... lots of choice but I can%26#39;t make the call on which one to choose! Want a suite / deluxe room (need very good accomodation and service) and probably want some leisure centre / spa... and obviously want good value - Le Palais, Pachtuv, Hoffmeister... any suggestions? Will places like Le Palais offer upgrades if I leave it late enough to book???

To me the Four Seasons is a disappointment, rather boring and unexceptional.Yes, the service is fab, but that is expected at their rates.

Le Palais goes out of the way with a genuine personal service. The location is a bit out of the center, but easy at reach. I would not mind the location.

In Mala Strana are two fantastic places, Alchymist, a kitschy, but romatic place with a super spa and Aria, a theme hotel with a little cinema, music theme, 3000 CD and DVDs to rent for fre etc. Very special. I am talking small hotels, not to compare with a George 5, ok.

Pachtuv is a fantastic city palais in great location (same as Four Season), but more a residence and you may miss some of the services a real 5 star offers.

Four Seasons. Great location on the river almost at the end of the Charles Bridge and with an outside terrace just above the water (though probably unusable late Nov), walkable to everywhere, and you know what you%26#39;re getting with this brand. Josef is for the self-satisfied.

The Mandarin has a great location right off Charles Bridge and yet so quiet! It is an oasis. They are offering three nights for the price of two for the first half year. Much more elegant and distinguished than the Four Seasons. The only advantage of the FS are the rooms with a view over the Castle, but you pay extra for that. At some tables at the restaurant you have that view too, but just a few. The food at the Madarin is way better than here.

Hi - my parents stayed at the Le Palais. Although they couldn%26#39;t fault the hotel but location-wise it was too far out. It%26#39;s a good 40 mins walk to the hub of Prague. Nevertheless, they enjoyed Prague and certainly be going back but to another 5-star hotel called the Radisson which is much closer to the centre. They had a look inside and thought it was lovely.

thinking of booking for new year stay, we were also thinking of boat trip but concerned now, two ladies (40%26#39;s) travelling alone any suggestions welcome

come. the fireworks wondeful but are a bit hary if you stand in the wrong place - Roma hotel is a 10 minute walk from Legii bridge which is a fairly safe place to watch the fireworks. Eat your main meal in the lunchtime if you want to avoid paying through the nose for a new years eve party menu. Olympia and Cantina, both down the road from the roma are good.

not a fan of boats on new years eve. Remember it is well below zero oustide and unlike in a restaurant, you can%26#39;t leave until the boat docks and the party finishes - this may well be 3am.

Christmas Markets

I have read somewhere that there is a Christmas market at the exhibition grounds in Holesovice. Does anyone know if this still happens and if so is it worth the travel (it appears to be on a tram route) . Also are there any other interesting places to go in the area at that time of year. Thanks.

there is a small christmas market and the funfair runs if you have kids and can trust the safety of the rides. Doesn%26#39;t have the setting of the market at the old town square. If you want an out of town market, the market at namesti miru ( 2 metro stops from Wenceslas Square) is very good

Ballet at the state opera house - best seating?

I never been to a ballet before, but am thinking of catching a midsummer nights dream at the state opera house on november 22. I was wondering where the best seats would be to see this.

Has anyone seen this ballet and is it good? Is the parterre better than the ground floor box seats? And is it better to view it from the 1st balcony boxes or the 1st balcony seats than on the ground floor?

I just had a quick look at which tickerts were available for the ballet on the 22nd November and your choices are fairly limited. If you google ticket portal cz and take the English option, then click on caldender, 22 November and then the performance you are interested in, you will find a plan of the theatre and which seats are available. This is the only site I know which lets you pick exactly the seats you want, all the others just offer best available.

I would sort your seats out a bit sharpish if I were you. We usually opt for a box but I%26#39;m not sure if there are many left.

If you need any more help with booking just ask.

Yeah, I was looking at the tickets too. Do you believe that box 21 or 22 on the ground floor are good? Are they too far back? I%26#39;m going with my girlfriend, and she is 5%26#39;2%26quot;. Will she be able to see the stage, or will people%26#39;s heads be blocking her view. I see some free seats on the 2nd balcony. Or should I just stick with seats on the parterre row 12, or 13. Is that a better view than on the ground floor? Thank you so much for you response.

All the seats have a good view of the stage, the question is how much of the %26quot;off-stage%26quot; activity you want to see i.e. scene changes, orchestra pit etc. The more central and lower down the seat, the less chance of seeing the off-stage stuff. I remember that the 2nd floor central is good because when the opera was getting a bit slow I concentrated on the conductor or one of the musicians.

We go in the cheap seats in the 2nd balcony. The opera house is quite small so the view is still very good if you get a central seat. The prices are also very reasonable. There is a free cloakroom and a very good little bar. A glass of sparkling wine makes a nice treat in the interval. Last January we went to see Cinderella ( with male ugly sisters) which was superb.

People still dress up for the opera house so you can take your shoes in a bag and leave the boots or trainers in the cloakroom.

We book our tickets at the box office as soon as we arrive in Prague and have never been dissapointed yet. My sister asked if there were discounts for pensioners to be told very kindly %26quot;Yes but only for Czech pensioners.%26quot; We have been to opera and ballet for three years running and have never paid more than £10 a ticket at the box office. I think that the reason the 2nd balcony is so reasonable is that the seats do not appear to be sold via the booking agencies.

One tip which will save you walking miles. At Museum metro take the disabled lift from the platform to the street and then cross the road to the opera house by the underpass.

I would always go for a balcony box rather than a balcony seat, as they have their own coat hangers and you can save yourself 20 minutes queueing at the garderobe after the performance. Only buy a front row box seat, unless you want to stand all the way through.

As Jason says, even at the back of the state opera house, the view is good; the auditorium is quite small

3 Days in Prague

Hi! My sister and I will be visiting Prague for the first time this December. We will be there from December 26 - 28. What would you recommend seeing/experiencing in Prague? We have three days to fill, and we really want to experience the culture. We%26#39;re in our early - mid twenties with plenty of energy and enjoy art, architecture, music, and other cultural experiences. Any suggestions? A sample three-day itenerary perhaps? Thank you!

How to get to Arcotel Teatrino?

Could someone tell me the easiest (and cheapest) way to get from the airport to the Arcotel Teatrino Hotel. We are arriving in Prague about one in the afternoon.

cheapest way is by bus 119 to Dejvicka metro, then metro to Jiriho z Podebrad metro and then a 15 minute downhill walk. cost will be 20 crowns if you have only aircraft hand luggage sized bags.

Easiest is to jump in one of the taxis you will see outside the airport door - the yellow AAA taxis are slightly cheaper than the grey Fix taxis. Cost should be about 700 crowns

recommended hotels near Jewish Quarter and itinerary

Am planning a trip to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest in July for our 30th Anniversary. Would appreciate the following suggestions:

1.We are thinking of flying into Prague, then going to Vienna, then Budapest.

2. We know we want to stay in Prague near the Jewish Quarter, but are looking for moderate type hotels

what other hotels in Vienna and Budapest would you recommend that are centrally located but basically moderate.

3. Sites to visit for best attractions itinerary.

Can you recommend the best way to get from the airport to the Jewish Quater? I am staying at the Josef Hotel.

depends what best means ( most convenient, luxurious or cheapest). Easiest is to jump in a taxi you will see outside the airport door. Cost should be 600 crowns, about 15 pounds

Valentines in Prague

I am about to book a romantic weekend in Prague, at the Cloisters Inn, but was wondering, does anyone know if it is really snowy in Prague in mid-February?

I think that all that snow stuff (and we see plenty in North Wales!!), coupled with the old buildings is very romantic.

Me and my girlfriend were over there on Valentines Day last year. It didn%26#39;t snow while we were there, but there was snow on the ground when we arrived and it stayed for the three days due to the freezing temperatures. Would recommend Prague at this time of year.

would have to agree with the last post, we also were there this year on valentine, snow on the ground but didnt snow during our 3 day stay but was v cold hence the snow not melting away! we also found it to be a great time of year to visit prague, the cold weather gave a great trip a intersting spin.

seeing the sites drinking the local hot wine all wrapped up made a really enjoyable trip, deff be a romantic setting for you. sitting outside at the u prince hotel in the evening ( under a patio heater!) really nice watching the world go by in the old town square.

I stayed there for Valentines 2 years ago, it was very snowy. It was in an apartment about 1 minute from the old town square - can%26#39;t remember the name but the website was www.citybreaksprague.com and it was about 30-35GBP per night in total I think .

I think the Easter markets are good too, that%26#39;s a great time to go too.

About the flight. It%26#39;s worth getting a flight that arrives in the afternoon so that if there%26#39;s loads of snow at least you get here. Early morning flights or late evening flights from the UK are often cancelled to allow for snow clearing etc.

Thanks for your help! September visit - mini report.

I just wanted to say thank you to Peb7 and the other local experts that helped make our trip to Prague a memorable one. It was really nice knowing which metro and stop to get off at to see everything and how and when to buy tickets for events.

Besides all of the great places and must see things we also did a couple of different things.

We went to Slava/Sparta hockey game and the fans in Toronto could learn a thing or two about how to have fun and cheer at a game. We paid 250 K for each ticket and were six rows from the ice in the corner. The arena is very nice and it was not close to being sold out. You walk right out of the Metro stop to the arena.

Our only trip out of Prague was to visit Plizen. Through this site we found Mike and hired a driver to take us. The driver was very nice and helped make the excursion a great one. He also gave us a great restaurant recommendation just across from the Pancrac Metro stop. We toured the Pilsner Urquell brewery and it is best brewery tour that we have been on because it is still operational and has a great history. The underground storage tunnels and tasting of unpasteurized beer is well worth the visit. We had lunch in the old town of Plizen at the restaurant attached to the museum. It was very reasonable and tasty.

My wife was a little intimidated by all of the Hearts fans and the gate we had to enter was right beside theirs, but it was good natured fun. You have to bear in mind that going to a sporting event in Toronto would be akin to visiting the Opera in other parts of the world. My wife even asked one of the police officers in riot gear if she could take his picture and he let her and even joked around with her. The ticket taker wanted us to go the Hearts gate but I told him we were cheering for Sparta. The locals assured us that all was okay and not to be worried. It was a good game that ended in a draw. 295K per ticket and we were right behind the opposition goal eight rows up. 35K for a beer. We purchased the tickets about 45 minutes before kickoff.

Prague was a beautiful city that is full of energy. The public transit is second to none and very affordable. We purchased a three day pass rather than worry about individual tickets and for 220K per ticket we felt it was well worth while.

We always felt safe except for a short walk from the Metro stop to the Panorama Hotel that is through an open alleyway/walkway. This was more from the deserted nature of the area at times than anything else. We were never bothered by anyone or had anyone attempt to pick our pockets.

All of our meals had correct bills, and yes we had bread put on the table and were charged but it was on the menu and it was an extra .03K or so. We were brought another round of drinks once without asking but I was going to ask anyway and at 21K for .5L of beer I was not about to complain. There are some great deals on food and drink if you just leave the main squares and wander around. The only overcharge we experinced was when we sat down opposite the clock at 2.45 to see it hit 3.00, but at least we had a seat.

Sounds like an idea to buy a pass.. Does this ticket allow travelling from Praha 5 to Praha 1? Is it zone restricted?

May I know how much is the minimum fare (anywhere) per ticket? 40CZK, or more?

I am not sure how much the single ticket costs. I believe that you can travel through all zones.

There were times where there was long line ups for the ticket machines and the pass enabled us to walk by. That in itself was worth a couple of extra dollars. we could also travel with our backpacks on the pass and they would be extra on a single ticket.

the 24 hour,. 72 hour or 7 day ticket allows you to travel anywhere in Prague, even into Prague 5 and to and from the airport. a single anwhere ticket is a 20 crown ticket which allows you to go as far as possible in Prague in 70 minutes (90 minutes off peak) and to change as many times as you want between metro, tram and bus in those 70 minutes

Shopping in Prague (shoes)

Do any of you local experts know the price of shoes there? I was looking at Mephisto shoes for men. (everyone says to have comfortable walking shoes while visiting there). Here in Canada they are 5,000 - 7,000 koruna. Any savings to wait and buy there?

Prague vs. Budapest for Christmas

My husband and I are loooking for a romantic getaway Christmas weekend and are choosing between Prague and Budapest. The truth is it will likely come down to airfare, but which city is better in the winter weather and around the holiday?

Anyone been to either around this time, did you feel restricted on what sites you could see during winter? I%26#39;ve actually been to both for a very short time in summer and we want to use this an an opportunity to explore one city well whiel our kids are with their grandparents!

Any and all advice is welcome!

there are too many riots on the streets of budapest at the moment to visit. Prague, despite the pickpockets is much safer and wins hands down

I was in Prague last year for Christmas and Budapest the year before.

Everything and I mean everything closes on Christmas Eve even our 4 Star hotel.

We had to raid the mini bar for anything to eat.

We are going back to Prague this Christmas for our 3rd visit.

U Prince rooftop terrace

Hi,

Planning on a couple of drinks or cocktails on the U Prince roof terrace before dinner next month, but wanted to check the following:

1. Is it open to non-guests and is it ok to have to drinks only (as opposed to food, if they serve it).

2. Will it be covered by then? (mid November) If so, is there any point in going.......eg. are there still any views to be had even if it%26#39;s covered?

in the day and late at evening, the U Prince terrace is open for non guests. sometimes though at lunchtime, they require you to have lunch if it is busy. It is open unless it is raining or really cold - they have those gas heaters up there. View is well worth it, although you do get a better view for less than the cost of an U Prince coffee by going to the top of the tower of the old town hall on the opposite side of the street; and you can see insde the workings of the astronomical clock halfway up

We go up there every January ,it has become quite a ritual ,even been sat out under the canopies with the gas heaters blazing during a snow storm it was just magical!

Christmas in Prague

My husband and I will be in Prague from 22/12-27/12, will we have to book restaurants in advance for 24th and 25th? Can anyone recommend a nice restaurant for a festive dinner? Finally are the any special Christmas %26#39;events%26#39;? How many days will things close down for Chrristmas?Thanks!

We were there over Xmas last year--it wasn%26#39;t too hard to find a place to eat on the whole, but a reservation for the 24th (the night Czechs celebrate the holiday) is a good idea. The other thing you should do is make sure to go Prague Castle on the 25th--for Xmas day, there is no admission charge for anything, so you can see the entire complex (except the Powder Tower, for some reason) for free!

Shops in Prague have gotten used to opening on the morning of the 24th and closing at lunchtime or early afternoon. Small private shops and businesses may not open either on 24th or 25th althought most places are back to normal by 26th. Restaurants and bars often have holiday surcharges built into meal prices etc especially in the evening. Don%26#39;t expect to see too many Father Christmas type people walking around. The %26quot;dress-up%26quot; celebration is usually at Mikulas in the first week of December.

you can see the entire Prague castle complex on any day for free - the courtyards and open spaces are a public space.

Christmas main meal is on Christmas Eve, evening not on Christmas Day. Many restuarants have special Chirstmas menus. If you are after turkey, go to the Intercontinental, Hilton or Marriott - Prague restaurants don%26#39;t know turkey dinner for Christmas.

Most shops and muzeums close 24th to 26th, but there is still enough to see without going inside. Good Christmas carols on the old town square on 24th. Also go on the streets to see the locals buy their Christmas carp to take home - fascinating, but gruesome

Right near the Marriott is the Czech restaurant Celnice. Good restaurant, good beer. The basement has a popular club. For a little more edge, Chateau L%26#39;Enfer Rouge also has a bar upstairs and disco downstairs.

Cocktail bars: Tretter%26#39;s, Ocean Drive, Bugsies, Tynska Bar and Books.

DJ bar: M1 Secret Lounge.

Clubs: Radost FX, Duplex. Lucerna Music Bar on Fridays and Saturdays for 80s night.

Prague in November

Hi there. We are visiting Prague for my fiance%26#39;s 30th birthday in November, just the 2 of us. I would like to know if anyone can recommend a really nice restaurant for a special meal?? And also pub/nightlife wise is there some bars playing cheesy pop type music and also anyone knows of places that play indie music also?? All help very much appreciated! The weekend we are going Fri 17th Nov is a bank holiday, does anyone know if this will affect our visit ie will all shops.museums be closed??

Special is Kampa Park with a view over the Charles Bridge www.kampagroup.com. Palffy Palac is an old fashioned place with lots of atmosphere. I love the Sahara Cafe, which is not exactly down town, but has great atmosphere and food.

Also a good place for your age group is Pravda in the Jewish Quarter. A place to watch and being seen. And close to the bars. (Tretters, Bugsies, Ocean Drive, all within 5 min walk)

Shops in the tourist area will be open, I am not sure about the Museums, they are usually closed on Mondays.

muzeums will be open as well (apart from as Martina says on Monday), but close at dusk, which after this weekend is much earlier.

The city will mostly be absent of locals - most will go to the countryside, but this should not impact is or is not open in the centre

Another resturant question

I am reading thru some of the resturant posts...some list the KampaPark as very good and another just recent post did not even meantion it. I just received an email from my German friend who I will be traveling to Prague with and she wants me to reserve a couple of resturants for our 4 day trip in November. What would you recommend for two women....I like the looks and people watching atmosphere as much as the food....I don%26#39;t know her that well but I think she has pretty sophisticated food tastes from the places I have been taken to while visiting Germany. Any help would really be appreciated as I will feel a little responsible for my choices. I would like to do two upscale resturants and 2 pub/beer type places with simple but good local foods. Thanks!

Kogo at Slovansky Dum has great Mediterranean food and is great for people watching.

I would reserve a table by the window in Kampa Park and as another upscale option Pravda.That is where people go to to be seen. Cheaper restaurants, but very good are Kogo restaurants (one in Havelska, one in Slovansky Dum and D%26#39;Angolo in Dlouha) or the Ambiente restaurants www.ambi.cz. Or Cafe Colonial in Siroka.

Thanks for the info. When I go to eat at a resturant in a foreign country I want to really feel like I am in the country if that makes sense. When I am in China I eat chinese....Germany...German food. In the US we always go to different ethnic resturants...so for me its a treat to get to try the local dishes while in that particular country. I have never been to Prague and I hope I can experience the true culture of Prague....although with todays easy global access to everything I think every country is a mixture of many cultures....I am making online reservations at KampaPark today and am curious about the upstairs/downstairs issue at Pravda.

I haven%26#39;t been in a while -- but used to be that downstairs, by the water has the best views of the Charles Bridge, but was a glassed in area that had portable heaters.

HI Jason! I like to be on the street level, as I love to sse who walks by - with all the celebraties visiting, that can be interesting.

KG, if you want to visit a real Czech pub/ restaurant, go to %26quot;U Tunich%26quot;, which is about 10 min from Muzeum Metro/ National Museum. www.vtunich.cz will not help you much, it is only in Czech, but just in case. They do really good Czech food at really low prices (Lunch menu for less than 100KC = less than 4 Euros). Friendly service and menues with english translation. (V Tunich 14, 224 942 889)

I have Kampa Park reserved for Sat night of our stay...they were so fast in replying. They did not answer my questions about credit cards...do the high end resturants take credit cards....remember I am an American were we even use credit cards at MacDonald%26#39;s!!

What we need:

Unpretentious, nice food, both reasonable and pricey, a bit of everything.. maybe one posh, one not so, one cheap etc...

coda in the hotel aria in mala strana is very good, as is kampa park by the river and la provence in the old town. Less pricy good restaurants are cafe colonial, lary fary and restaurante brasiliero all near the old town square

first time in prague

My friend and i are going to Prague for 2 Days in January (9th %26amp; 10th). What kind of weather do we expect, do we need comfy shoes for walking and what is the best way to travel round Prague ie Bus, Walk etc.

We are staying at the Hotel Pariz so where are the best restaurants, cafe%26#39;s and locations to see. Are there any other clues for us to look out for ie Pick Pockets etc.

What kind of prices are we looking at for Good Steaks Fish etc and any other recommendations that you could supply me with. Thanks

Hallo, the weather will be about 0°C so take a wraps. Also comfortable shoes will be good if you want travel.

If you will be accomodated in hotel Pariz it is near to center you will not need ticket. Almost everything is near. if you will go on some places which are not in center, take a underground. It is clean and fast.

You can also rent a car and go to Karlovy Vary, Mikulov, Kutná hora and other very nice places. Good price rent car is www.asap-rentcar.cz.

Good steaks in centrum are expensive. The good restaurant is in Plaská street - U zlatého hada.

Have a nice trip.

As LucieS says, mostly you%26#39;ll be walking with the odd metro trip thrown in (you are right next to the Namesti Republiky metro). Most of the places have online menus so you can pre-calculate the costs. U Zlateho Hada means %26quot;at the Golden Snake%26quot;. At steak at the snake.......

Its a lot colder than England. We went one January and boy was it cold, and that is with thermals, woolley hat, two fleeces and a coat ! Dont forget scarf and gloves. I live in Germany and thought I was used to fairly cold winters compared to England, it does feel bitter believe me.

We are also going to Prague for the first time 14-18 December, staying in the Hotel Kinksy Gardens which we gather is a bit out of the centre (but should be quieter ??).

We wondered where are the main Christmas markets held ? And are there any other Christmassy things to take in ?

There seems to be a bit of conflicting advice about as to how long it takes to walk from the Kinksy Gardens to the main tourist area / castle - how long do you think it would take. Sorry about all these questions ! Thanks in advance for your help.

kogo and ambiente%26#39;s brasilian restaurant, both in slovansky dum, Lary fary in dlouha and DaNico, also in Dlouha are good restaurants within 10 minutes walk of the Pariz. You can eat here for 20 pounds or so a head with beer.

Will be cold cold cold by UK standards so wrap up warm, or factor in lots of cafe stops during the day - svarak (mulled wine), or grog (rum, hot water, lemon and sugar to taste) help a lot! Likely to snow, heavy grey skies etc, although sometimes if you are lucky, you may get crystal clear skies, although it%26#39;ll still be very cold.

Walking is the best way to see Prague, and all the main sites are in the centre. Pickpockets usually ride the metro in the centre, or the trams (particularly the 9, 22 and 23 as these go through tourist areas). Watch out for large groups of people, hustling you as you get on and off of metros and trams.

Prices for food depend on what you think is reasonable. By UK standards everything is cheap, but would say anything between 200 and 400 crowns for a main course would mean pretty decent food provided it isn%26#39;t pitched as a %26#39;tourist restaurant%26#39; (which most of the stuff in the centre is). Pravda has very good food near your hotel. Fish on Kampa island is expensive but has good fish (although bear in mind, Prague is in central Europe so the fish is VERY expensive, and not always very fresh). Avoid the jewish quarter (near your hotel) or old town square as they are overpriced and the quality of food and service is not very good.

how much is Bacardi in bars and is it widely available

My sister doesnt like lager or beer.She prefers shorts especially bacardi.Is it widely available and is it expensive.

If you search any of the restaurants website menus they usually have drinks lists too. Bacardi seems to be widely available and ranges from about £1.20 - £2.50 on the ones I looked at.

one thing to remember is that in Prague a spirit measure tends to be 50ml compared to 25-30ml generally given in Britain.

If it%26#39;s Baccardi on it%26#39;s own then it%26#39;s priced as a %26quot;shot%26quot;. This will be a 4cl glass and expect tp pay around 65kc (1 pound 60). It is pretty much the cheap end of the market. You%26#39;ll find rum cocktails floating around the 110kc range i.e. 3 pounds. You might find %26quot;Havanna Club%26quot; and %26quot;Captain Morgan%26quot; are a bit more widespread here. Many of the coctail bars list online prices and drink menus. My recommedations are at www.livingprague.com/bar.htm. Remember that %26quot;Napojovy%26quot; means drink list and %26quot;Jidelni%26quot; means food menu.

Don%26#39;t be surprised if your sister orders a mixed drink (rum and coke, gin and tonic) and the two are brought over separately. Many bars don%26#39;t serve the drinks in one glass as rum is a shot which is usually drunk on its own by Czechs. She will have to mix it herself!

Prague strudl

On Samantha Brown, travel channel, she went to a strudl place in the outskirts. I saw a post that said the name and address was Susta Strudl, Jeseniova 29, Prague 3. Has anyone been there? The strudl on her show was huge, about the size of a small loaf of bread, and cost a little over a US dollar. Thanks. Marlyne

YES! I love that guy, have been buying strudl from him since he opened in the 90s. The location is a tad hard to find though - bring a map. And don%26#39;t be scared of the projects nearby. By the way there is a nice unexpected view of Prague castle from the top of the hill above - a nice unusual vista.

He makes many different kinds but the classic apple is still the best in my opinion.

Big doesn%26#39;t always mean good! If you are going to have a meal out, you could always combine a lovely meal with the plum strudl for dessert (served with walnut ice cream and curd sauce) at Zahrade v opere (a very nice restaurant at the top of Wencelas Square), or experience cafe culture - Cafe Louvre (on narodni trida) do a nice one - it goes well with a Viennese coffee (coffee with whipped cream).

Anyone know these places. . .?

Hi everybody,

I%26#39;m off to Prague in 3 weeks with my wife and in-laws(!).

Going on Sunday evening for 3 nights and can%26#39;t wait. I know Prague fairly well but was wondering does anybody know of these 2 particular places:

Kolkovna restaurant, v kolkovne, Prague 1

and

Restaurant Brasilero, u Radnice 81/2, Prague 1

Both places are close to our hotel (u Tri Bubnu) and they look interesting. Any thoughts anybody?

Both are well known. You%26#39;ve got a lot of choices around the Tri Bubnu. If you like Thai food then ask your hotel for directions to the %26quot;Arzenal%26quot; which is only two streets from you (especially if you like glass sculpture). If you like Indian food then try the Rasoi restaurant (also has the Bombay Cocktail bar in the same building) on the other side of the square.

As you know the address of Kolkovna, try the page at www.livingprague.com/htmap.htm and look for the %26quot;aerial photo%26quot; instructions. Have fun.

the advice above isn%26#39;t crystal clear. Both Kolkovna and Restaurant brasiliero are good. Go, but make a booking.

Cafe colonial on Siroka street about 5 minutes walk from the hotel is also good

Kolkovna has recently had a bad review in the local expat newspaper - lazy cooking, aimed at tourists etc..... Brasilero is much better - great atmosphere, LOADS of meat. Just make sure you don%26#39;t fill up on the cheaper meats they serve at the beginning of the evening (chicken, sausages). Save a space for the great beef, and langoustines which appear towards the end - you%26#39;ll know what I mean when you get there!

A couple of questions...

Please could someone help me out witth the following...

1. When do the Christmas markets start?

2. Performance at the State Opera House ar 7pm... best to have dinner before or after? Are there nearby restaurants catering specially for theatre goers?

Christmas markets start at the last November weekend and the closest restaurant to the Opera is Zahrada. They are used to opera goes.

I%26#39;d prefer a leisurely dinner before followed by a leisurely drink after. You have to go around to the back of the State Opera to get into the restaurant. Also the younger crowd can be found in the %26quot;Hot%26quot; Asian restaurant in the Hotel Jalta on Wenceslas Square which is a 5 minute walk from the Opera. The Zahrada staff knows that people coming into the restaurant before a performance want to eat and finish by 6-30pm so service is understanding of that fact.

Personally, I prefer a leisurely meal at Zahrade v opere afterwards, as it is more relaxing and you don%26#39;t feel so rushed. It does of course depend on how long the performance will be - have a late lunch if you are worried about your tummy rumbling at the wrong moment, or drop into a cafe for coffee and a cake late afternoon - that will add another dimension to the whole Prague experience! Cafe Louvre (narodni trida, near Tesco, can get smokey in the afternoon), or Cafe Savoy (Vitezná 126/1 - on the Mala strana side of Prague) are particularly good.

opera will be finished by 9.45. We often eat at zahrada afterwards (2 minutes walk away from the opera house if you turn right when you come out and walk round the back of the opera house) but you need to book.

Romantic restaurants with good views?

Hi I am bringing my husband to Prague 14th - 16th December for his birthday and looking for a couple of nice restaurants particularly ones with good views of the city. Romanticprague website offer a meal in a private tower of a chateau - do you know if this is any good? Also looking for a recommendation for a good czech restaurant with nice views.

Restaurants with a view are Kampa Park, Hergetova Ciehelna (www.kampagroup.com), the restaurant at the Four Seasons and Sovovy Mlyn. You have a view only if you sit right by the (few) windows in La Perle de Prague.

Avoid the chateau - it isn%26#39;t clear where it is in the city from the website. Would recommend Kampa Park for a special meal - down on the river, view of Charles Bridge, quite pricey; Cihelna is also good for something a little less formal if you get a window seat (close to Kampa park); The Four Seasons Hotel (Allegro terrace, check their website) - very pricey but definitely one of the best restaurants in Prague, view of bridge and castle; Mlynec is also good - a view of the bridge from the other side of the river.

none of the terraces will of course be open in december, but kampas riverside terrace is now enclosed and is open in the winter. Mylnec in my mind just looks at a pool next to the charles bridge and bellevue really only has one table which has the view. Four seasons is more pricy than kampa and you need to book the window tables well in advance.

try looking also at nebizozek restaurant halfway up petrin hill (reached by funicular) - the views are better when the trees have lost their leaves and le perle de prague at the top of the dancing building outside the city centre

Reasonably priced place to eat before opera

I am flying into Prague on 15 December. Should get to my hotel about 4.30 pm. I have taken a risk that I%26#39;m not going to get any delays (!) and booked to see La Traviata at the national state opera house. I am staying at KK Central. The opera starts at 7 pm. Timing is going to be a bit tight.

Can someone recommend somewhere to eat before the opera. It would need to be somewhere close to the opera or is the food ok at the KK Central?

Can someone tell me how far away the KK Central is to the opera house? Can I walk it or should I book a taxi?

You can walk to the opera; right next to it is the restaurant Zahrada, that is very nice and used to early dinners for opera visitors.

There is no need to book. The restaurant is right next to the opera, so you have full control over your time.

You can also eat at Zahrada v opere after the opera (especially as your stomach will still be on English time!) It has a better atmosphere then, imo, and you can enjoy your meal at a more leisurely pace. Would recomend booking a table - went there this week and the place was basically full. Food is good, although avoid the duck as a fellow diner found it quite tough. The plum strudl is very good!

offbeat prague in a day

had a day off yesterday - weather was gorgeous. Have some friends over and so rather than showing them the tourist bits which they can see by themselves, showed them some off beat places, all in a day. This may appeal to people who have been to Prague before and think they have seen everything.

Started with a walk round Vinohrady (purely because I live there), but the architecture is stunning. Walked into Rigerovy Sady which has a wonderful view of the city and the castle in the morning (sunlight behind us)

Walked down to Namesti miru metro, but before had a great lunch in Sahara Cafe in Namesti miru. Took the metro to Vysehrad and spent a couple of hours there. Great views of the city. They have almost finished the restoration of the St Peter and Paul basilica in the Vysehrad complex and I can say that with the exception of the church of the Knights of the Maltese Cross (which is not normally open to the public) the interior is the most stunning church by far in Prague. Go there - well worth the 30 crown entrance fee).

Walked down the steps. took the number 17 tram to the national theatre. Walked across most legii (great views of the castle and Charles bridge). Took the funicular up to Petrin hill (funicular now open). Went up the Petrin tower (great views of the city in the afternoon).

Walked round to the strahov monastery and had a beer looking at the city below. Walked round to Pohorelec and down Cerninska and Novy Svet (beats the golden lane in the castle any time). Walked back down the castle steps and back through the Valdsteijn gardens (almost impossible to find, but a haven of peace in the city) just before it got dark.

Sank at the end of an energetic day at Hergetova Cihelna (which was awful, but there are many other places you can sink into both in mala strana and 10 minutes walk across the manesuv most). Refreshed, walked into Kampa and across the charles bridge, making sure that once across the traffic lights at the bottom of charles bridge, we took a left through the Clementium instead of fighting though the crowds on Karlova to the old town square

peb7, sounds like you had a very enjoyable day. We missed all of those places, with the exception of Vysehrad which we found blissfully peaceful. You are so right...the basilica there is gorgeous. We%26#39;ll have to keep your itinerary in mind for our next trip, as it sounds like a great way to spend a day.

Regarding your beer at Strahov Monestary - I understand there is a brewery on the grounds - or nearby. Could you provide info on this? The beer is supposed to be good. Thanks!

the brewery is the Klasterini Pivovar and they make St Norberts Amber and dark beer which are excellent.

A week on Herm is an absolute haven for recharging the batteries. some say that it is absolutely boring, but in a cottage with no tv and just fresh air, fish, wonderful beaches and good weather, it is almost unbeatable. don%26#39;t know why people fly halfway round the world for an exotic island when you can get to one 3 hours from Weymouth

What to wear in Prague

Now that my November trip to Prague is getting closer I am starting to ask questions! I know it will be cold and it will help that I will be spending the week before in Germany with a similar climate so I will have warm clothes. I have a beautiful black mink jacket that is very stylish and very warm...is fur popular or will I have eggs thrown at me by antifur people?? Do the women wear pants at night...or do they wear skirts and dresses to the nice resturants. I have no concept of how far we will have to walk to things or what the streets are like. I am bringing stylish flat leather walking shoes and one dressy black pair of low heels. To make it easy most of my wardrobe will be black with some splashes of color in scarves, purses and sweaters. This wardrobe gets me by in New York....will it in Prague?? In Portland things have gotten so casual...on any given day when you look around you would think the entire population is going on a hike up to the mountains. So I need some city advise....thanks!

Hi, I was in Prague in January and will also be there in November.

I wore a full length racoon fur coat and like you worried about eggs being thrown at me. I need not have worried, although I did not see any other fur coats I did not get any adverse reactions. Indeed a few English speaking tourists commented on my coat and wished they had one too!

Like all places these days it seemed people were dressed relatively casual. I wore black trousers and black cashmere sweaters for most of the time with black suede boots which had a small heel but were comfortable and did not have a problem with the cobbled streets.

Just wear what you feel good in and yes most women seemed to wear trousers (pants) at night.

people in eastern europe wear fur to keep warm. You will not have eggs thrown at you. Bring good stout shoes with grips - leave the heels at home. The cobbles get slippery in the wet and mucky in the snow

I bought my waterproof/study/stylish shoes last week and have been breaking them in....no heels for me...except I will bring one nice pair of flats to wear to the resturants at night.

It depends where you are going in Prague. If you%26#39;re walking around the town during the day, most people will be tourists from all over the world - definitely go for the flats then as the combination of cobbles, and all the interesting things to see and do could leave you with tired feet.

If you are going out to restaurants in the evening, definitely wear the heels - don%26#39;t worry about what other people think. Most people dress up to go to restaurants and the theatre (pants and skirts) so you won%26#39;t be out of place at all (although the heels might be a bit over-the-top if you are going into a proper Czech pub!).

The fur coat may actually be a bit warm depending on when in November you%26#39;ll be here - the weather over the past week has been around 20 degrees celsius (sorry, not sure about fahrenheit!), although it has dropped to 13 today. It may also be a bit conspicuous as some Czech women do wear them, but not in November as it isn%26#39;t usually cold enough then.

Wear comfy shoes if you are sight seeing.

Just wear what you feel comfortable in, you are not going to a fashion show, so you only have to suit yourself.

We went over to Prague about Sep it was still quite warm, noticed people wearing a mixture of clothes.
