First trip to Prague.

My wife and I are going to Prague for 4 days at the end of November. We will be bringing along her parents, both of them in their seventies. We are staying at the Praha Palace hotel.

Having never been to Prague before, how should we spend our time? What places to visit etc to get a feel of the city and which places to avoid. Would like to get out of the city for a day, perhaps to the Crystal factory we have heard about. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

The castle is beautiful and is a must-see but its a very steep walk so it depends how fit your in-laws are as you can also catch a tram instead. Also, the old town square, with the astronomical clock and charles bridge are the obvious must-see%26#39;s. Personally I thought wencelas square was disappointing but generally all of Prague is very beautiful. The Mucha museum is also very good if you are interested in art and its very reasonable to go to the opera/ballet with a variety of options available.

Hi there,

First off I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll enjoy the trip.

I%26#39;d suggest you pre-book the transfer to/from the airport and your Hotel. There are several reputable transfer companies - we have used http://www.prague-airport-shuttle.com without any real problems several times for both larger groups and 4 of us. We did have a problem on our last return journey from a our of centre Hotel that resulted in several phone calls to Chris (Owner) but we did get to the Airport back OK and he waived the fee for the journey. Its the only bad expereince we have had so will use them again.

The next thing to do would be get a Public Transport three day pass for each of you (220CZK) - this means you can jump on/off the trams and underground as you want which could make it much easier for you Parents to get around. The tram system is great although it might take at least one visit to get to grips with it.

If you take the 22 or 23 Tram from town you can get to the Castle without too much up hill walking. Get off just before U Prasneho Mostu crosses the main road the tram is on (I can%26#39;t recall the stop name exactly but you will go past some gardens with the CAstle on your left) ) and you have a short, flat walk to Castle.

Watch your bags/pockets/wallets etc on the trams especially as the 22/23 which attract more tourists than some and therefore the less honest members of society :-(

Can%26#39;t help you with Crystal factory info - as for places to avoid, well thats a bit difficult really as everybody has their own ideas. Personally I%26#39;d always avoid such things as restaruants in the main squares and so on and try those a little off the main track.

If you want somewere a little different for a meal try the Baracnicka Rychta (http://www.baracnickarychta.cz). Popular with local Embassy staff it%26#39;s well worth the visit - interesting interior too. Take the small ally way opposite the Italian Embassy on Nerudova, follow it round and the entrance is on the corner of a rather none discript building (now painted green from memory)

Cheers

If you do a crystal tour then include it as part of a general Karlovy Vary tour (generally 9 hours). This can include the Moser glass factory, The Becherovka drink factory and the Thermal Hotel. At this time of year they normally drop the hotel. Lots of free mineral waters to try. Lots of opportunities to buy crystal at the Moser shop but, checkout prices at the Moser shop in Prague (Na Prikope) so you can see if you are saving anything. My advice is to pay what you think it%26#39;s worth. If you don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s worth it then don%26#39;t buy it.

For tour operators and options take a look at www.livingprague.com/tours.htm and that will help you decide about the city tour.

Please let us know how your trip turned out! I am planning a trip with my husband and bringing along my parents (also in their mid-seventies). We think we will plan a trip for about one week after the holdiay season. It will be a first trip to Prague for all of us so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
