Traveling with children

We will be traveling to Prague next year with our 7 year old. Any suggestions for kid friendly activities and/or must sees?

Take a look at www.livingprague.com/kids.htm for some places that we go to (or have been to).

Also take a look at www.paroplavba.cz (English version as well) for the timetable of the boat that goes to the zoo.

You must go to the zoo, and allow a full day for it. It%26#39;s a wonderful zoo with plenty for all ages.

Kids like trains, which means using the tram/metro takes on a new significance.

Maybe a dance performance of some sort, too, or a short daytime concert would be appropriate, too. I remember finding a toy store of wooden toys in Old Town, and thinking what fun that%26#39;d be- and I%26#39;m not even a little boy anymore!

It depends what interests your child has - you could try black light theatre - shows which combine dance and music, with no spoken words which can be fascinating, and have a long tradition here. The two below are good companies.

You could also try an afternoon ballet performance at the National Theatre if there is one on (www.narodni-divadlo.cz/Default.aspx?jz=en).

Depending on what time of year you are coming, you could try a football (soccer) match - Sparta Praha are the main team here http://www.sparta.cz/en/hp.shtml. The stands behind the goals are generally the best as they are away from the more %26#39;passionate%26#39; fans, and the tickets are cheap (around a dollar a ticket). Or you could try the ice hockey - again, Sparta are the main team here. http://www.hcsparta.cz/english.asp

I can suggest some activities my older kids (11,12) enjoyed in June that might be suitable for younger kids . Visiting the castle grounds at night was an unexpected highlight. You cannot go inside the buildings, but the lighting outside was very impressive, as were the views. You can walk around most of the outside areas. The %26quot;guards%26quot; were still on post and it was very easy to get photos next to them. The kids were excited to see the guards leaving for the night in a marching formation. The next day we went to visit the inside highlights, and it was very crowded with tour groups.

Elevator up clock tower in Old Town Square, easy and some views. Day trip to Kuntna Hora to see the bone church and silver mine, if you have a very adventurous 7 year old.

spend 2 hours in Sparky%26#39;s toy shop on Havirska in the old town.

don%26#39;t think any responsible parent would take a 7 year old kid to the stands behind the goal at sparta

I have to say that I go regularly to Sparta, and have never experienced problems behind the goal. It%26#39;s pretty easy to find a seat away from the crowd as the stadium doesn%26#39;t get that full. The only time I really wouldn%26#39;t recommend going is if it is a local derby (against Slavia), in which case I wouldn%26#39;t recommend going at all then as the crowds inside and outside can be intimidating.

Sparkys is definitely fun, but unfortunately the last time I was there in October it was extremely hot (thanks to the traditional Czech overheating), and I couldn%26#39;t wait to get out of there.

You could also try the Funicular railway which takes you up Petřin hill - you pick it up from Ujezd in Malostrana (on the 12/22/23 tram route). Your tram ticket is also valid for the funicular. The ride is short, but the view is great fun. The funicular runs every 15 minutes. There is an observation tower at the top too which you can climb, and there is also a mirror maze which is good too. Again, it all depends on when you will be here, as the funicular isn%26#39;t always open, and the observation tower only opens from May to September.

You could also try the Toy Museum at the castle too (in the courtyard just past Golden Lane), so you could combine some sightseeing for you, and then the museum for your child. Also, be aware that the castle gardens are closed now and won%26#39;t be open again until the 1st May.

Finally, for a child-friendly restaurant, you could try Ambiente - Restaurant Pizza Nuova, Revoluční 1 (next to Kotva department store which is about a 10-minute walk from Old Town Square). The restaurant has a children%26#39;s play area to keep them entertained whilst waiting for food.
