Xmas tree lights

I went to Prague the first weekend in Decamber last year to see the Xmas tree lights switched on in the Old Town Square only to find they where switchedon on the last Saturday in November . So after looking on the internet I have booked to be there the last Saturday in November now I find that Xmas doesnt start till 2nd December ! Can anyone tell me when the tree lighting cermony is and will there be any xmas markets from 22nd November.Thanks

the local information says that the Christmas lights and markets go on on 25th November. Where do you read that Xmas starts on 2nd December?

|||

What a relief ! one site i vistied was pragueexperience.com and myczechrepublic.com stated that the tree was to be switched on by the President on 27thNovember which is a monday

hate to confirm, but double checking, I think you are right. The Prague city hall website says that the markets will be held between 2nd December and 1st January. Markets normally start the 4th Saturday before 24th December, which normally means the last Saturday in November. But because 24th December is a Saturday, this means that the 4 saturdays are 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd.

Sorry for misleading you

Does this mean there will be no xmas markets in Prague till 2 December ? I think this is very disappointing as I booked my flights etc; in September when the information I was given was markets started the last week in November and tree lights wereto be switched on 25th November like last year They really ought to get it right as many tourists wil be disappointed too.

2nd December appears to apply to the market in the old town square and at the foot of wenceslas square.

nevertheless, all hope is not lost. My favourite neighbourhood christmas market at namesti miru (2 metro stops from the centre) starts on Monday 20th November, but beware, each night it closes at 7pm (but then it gets dark at 4pm)

Peb7 - Thanks sooo much! I was so sad to be missing the Xmas festivites by leaving for home on Nov 26. Thanks for the info on Namesti Miru. Hope I can find it!

Good website re: Christmas markets (with dates) here: http://www.vanocnitrhy.cz/default.htm

travelgirl. Namesti miru is easy. Take the green line metro from the city to the metro station called namesti miru. come up the escalators, take the exit at the far end of the concourse and you are in the square.

good restaurant called Cafe Sahara on the square you can eat at afterwards

According to http://www.vanocnitrhy.cz/default.htm there is a Christmas Market at Avion Park in Praha 5, can any one tell me how to get there please? It doesn%26#39;t appear in on any of the maps that I have nor in the six guide books. Is it worth seeking out?

out near Nove Butovice metro and will comprise of about 5 stalls in a shopping centre car park.

If you are coming before 2 December and want to go to a Christmas market in Prague, go to the one at Namesti Miru which is 2 metro stops from the centre on the green metro line. Beware though that the market closes at 7pm. Go for dinner at the Sahara Cafe on the square (on the left of the theatre)
