National Theatre: which seats are the best ?

Hi, I am lookign to buy some seats to go to the National Theatre Prague to attend Samson et Dalila on December 29th.

I d%26#39;ont know which seats I should book. I want the best ones.

what do you think of balcony central stall first row ?

orchestra first few rows ?

well, any advice is appreciated.

thanks a lot.

|||

1st balcony 1st row is better than the first few rows of the orchestra - you can see more. I think the best seats are the front rows of the stalls boxes - they may not have the view of the front row of the balcony, but have useful attributes - you can arrive when you like, even after the bell, they have own coat hangers which saves you the scrum of the garderobe after the performance and you can be first out for the bubbly at the interval and for the lavatories, if needed. boxes 4 to 7 give the best views, as are further back

the nutcracker

A party of 4 of us are hoping to see the Nutcracker on Monday the 11th Dec. Where is the best place to obtain tickets. Should we pre-book on a website and get the tickets sent to the hotel, or caontact our Hotel(Hotel Tyl) and ask them to arrange tickets.

What is the dress code for the National Theatre? If we can%26#39;t obtain tickets for the Nutcracker, we fancy an opera any suggestions.

Many thanks

John

www.ticketsbti.cz offer sa good booking service and can show you what is on if the ballet is good. Most people dress as suits / jacket and tie for the national theatre, but smart casual is also acceptable

Transport from Airport to Hotel Tyn

I arrive in Prague at 11.30 AM on Sun 10th Dec and plan to use the Public Tranport to go to the Hotel Tyn (I P Pavlova). Is this easy and how much is a ticket, does the same ticket do the bus + metro. Can someone please advise(number bus metro line ect).

Also any recommendations on resaurants + bars around the Hotel, and finally what time does the metro run until at night.

Many Thanks

John

|||

Assume you mean the hotel which is in tylovo namesti, not the hotel tyn. if correct, take bus 119 from the airport to metro dejvicka. Then take green metro to station namesti miru. You can either walk down jugoslvaska street for 5 minutes until you get to tylovo namesti, or you can catch any tram for one stop until you come to ip pavlova. cost is 20 crowns, assuming you have aircraft hand luggage size, otherwise you need a luggage ticket. As you will need the tram / metro into the centre every day, you will be best to buy a 3 day or 7 day public transport card (which covers bus metro and tram). 3 day costs 220 crowns. You can buy these at the Prague Trasnsport Authority offices across the arrivals hall foyer at the ariport when you have cleared customs. A 3 or 7 day public transport ticket will cover your journey to and from the airport and you don%26#39;t need a luggage ticket with one.

Pivovarsky dum on the corner of jecna and lipova street is a good pub where you can eat. Other places nearby for eating are u bile kravy on rubesova, bonante on anglicka and cafe sahara on namesti miru. there is a good neighbourhood christmas market on namesti miru without the crowds of the old town square.

metro runs until just after 12pm, trams run all night, but the hotel is walking distance from the centre

|||

Thank you Peb7 you have assumed right I am staying at the Hotel Tyl Tylovo Nameski. I have just been given unused 20 crown transport tickets off a friend who was in Prague in Oct will these still be ok to use and how much is a luggage ticket? I arrive at 11.30 AM on Sun morning and leave the Hotel Tyi at around 5 PM Wen night to catch a 8 PM flight so i assume a 3 day pass is not quite long enough.

If i bought a 3 day pass at 11.30 Sun

1. does it last for sunday, monday and tuesday

2.does it last for 72 hours from when bought i.e run out 11.30am wednesday

3.or if bought 11.30am sunday but not used until 6pm sunday evening would it last until 6pm wednesday

so if i bought a luggage ticket to go with my unused 20 crown ticket to get to the hotel and at the same time bought a 3 day pass but did not use until 6pm sun would this be enough to get me back to the airport 6pm wednesday?

Many Thanks

John

|||

3 day passes last 72 hours from the time you first stamp it (when you get on the first bus, metro, tram). a luggage ticket is 10 crowns. 20 crown ticket will get you from the airport to the hotel

Transport 3 day pass

I want to pick up a 3 day public transport pass. Where can I purphase these? Do I need change and how much do they cost.

ta

jim

|||

The 3 day pass is 220Kc. If you are flying in, there is a Prague Transport booth in the entrance hallway as you come out of baggage claim. They are also sold at all metro stations and at many tobacco (Tabak) shops around the city.

|||

only sold at all metro stations where there is a ticket office. Many metro stations do not have ticket offices, only the orange ticket machines. 3 day passes are not sold from ticket machines. As csaconsult says, you are best to buy one at the airport - at least the people in the ticket office speak english there

|||

Thanks, since I am in Prague 4 days I was planning to buy the pass for the 2nd to 4th days and using a transfer from the airport, in the evening hence I will not do any travel on the first night. Is a 7 day pass much more expensive and the airport office seems a good idea, Regards

Jim

|||

3 day pass is 220 crowns. 7 day pass is 280 crowns - the difference is one pound fifty. You may as well buy a 7 day pass and have the flexibility to use it all days

|||

Peb,

Jimkav is from Glasgow. That one pound fifty could buy a half pint of beer.

:-)

Jason

|||

Think I will go for the 7 day pass. I would rather pay the 1.5 pound at the airport and save myself 30 mins buying a pass the next day. Thats 30 mins extra sight seeing time !

Thanks

Arcadia Residence

Hi, I%26#39;m thinking about booking the Arcadiea Residence Hotel for my parents for a city break in September. It does sound really good but what I need to know is how far away it is from the old town - how long does it take to walk or get a tram there from the hotel? Also, does anyone know how long the trams run until at night? Or alternatively, how much would it cost to get a taxi from the town back to the hotel at night?

Thank you very much for your help!

|||

tram 17 and 18 from down the street take you right by the old town. Tram 18 also takes you to below the castle. Normal trams run till just after midnight and then there are night trams 53 and 55 which run sporadically through the night. I would use the trams and not use taxis - they are clean, safe and cheap. Buy a multiple public transport pass at the airport before you leave.

would take a good 30 minute walk and it is not the most pleasant route

Skydiving in Prague/Birthday treat help

Hi,

I%26#39;m taking my fella to Prague in early January for his birthday, can anyone suggest places to go on his birthday, I was thinking about skydiving but dont think anyone does them in Jan as its too cold, unless anyone knows different?

Would like to make it really special, so help with dinner locations, sights to see, etc would be really appreciated...anything romantic :)

Thanks

Emily

|||

www.pragueexperience.com arranges such things, if they are possible. I%26#39;m not an expert in parachutes, so cannot say if skydiving does or does not work in sub zero temperatures

Anybody use www.flats.cz

They have some apartments listed for a building on Vodickova. Anybody rent from them or stay in these apartments?

Thanks.

|||

make sure they are not facing the street, as there is a tramline which runs down vodickova and the trams run all night

|||

We have stayed in apartments on Vodickova twice and have had no problems with noise, but we have always made sure that our apartments were on the top floor.

|||

Thanks all. Much appreciated.

Snow in Prague

I will spend 3 days in Prague in January. Does it normally snow there at this time of the year? If not, can anyone recommend me a place nearby where I can take my 13 year-old to get to know it, I mean the snow - very rare in Brazil.

Thanks a lot

|||

Just head north towards Teplice if and it has snowed, you%26#39;ll find it here. Otherwise, spend the day at Liberec as this is normally guaranteed snow at this time.

Jason

|||

There should be snow right at the airport. Whilst they clear the snow on the streets in the city centre, the hills and parks of the city (for example; Petrin Hill, Letna or Stromovka park) should have plenty of enough snow on. Be careful though, when it snows on snow, it gets icy and its hard when you fall over.

|||

I fell and broke my ankle a few years ago in that fashion. Not in Prague, though.

Which airport bus do we get on to get to hotel Raffaello?

Hi All,

This is a very last minute thought having just got our prague tourist guide today. We fly to prague tomorrow at 11.30 am and are staying at hotel Raffaello which is on Legerova.

We dont really want to get an expensive taxi and quite enjoy the public transport side of travelling, can you please help us to get to our hotel?

Also does the 3 day travel pass cover this journey?

Thanks very much, were really looking forward to tomorrow !!!

Tiesim

|||

hiya we went to the raffaello last year, when you get out of arrivals, catch a white minibus taxi (fixed price per person), which will take you direct to your hotel. they are alot cheaper than normal taxi cars. Minibuses will take up to eight people, but the driver will follow a route and drop off as necessary. the hotel is excellent, the breakfast is only continental, and there is no bar at reception, minibars are provided at a very reasonable rate.

It is only a ten minute walk to St Wencesles square, and the tram is on the corner of Pavlova Square.

we are going as well tomorrow but staying in a different area. Hope you enjoy your break, but do not exchange money with the touts that come up to you in the street. otherwise a very beautiful place and you will want to go again.

Airport to Hotel Elite (Ostrovni 32)

Hi There, Can anyone advise the best way to get from the airport to our hotel without using a taxi? I know there is an airport bus - but not sure where it will drop us and which metro line to take afterwards.

Thanks in advance,

haze

|||

if you want to get by public transport, either take the 119 airport bus to metro dejvicka where the bus terminates. Take the green line metro to mustek - when you come out of the metro, take the exit to your left (mustek). Ostrovni is a 15 minute walk from mustek metro.

Alternatively, take the 100 bus to zlicin metro where the bus terminates. Take the yellow line metro to narodni trida, when you come out, go left through the low life shops and ostrovni is the first street on the left as you cross the tramline. The yellow line route is easier, but takes longer

City Club Hotel

Hi

booked a break here for Feb 2006 for my partners birthday. Heard its not a brilliant hotel but close to city centre. Can anyone who has stayed here recently tell me more? Can not find much on here for this hotel.

Also i understand it is easy and cheap to get a metro from the Airport. Can anyone tell me the exact route, stops etc?

Realise it will prob be really cold but looking forward to that as well.

Only there for a few days so what would be the best things to see for this time of year. Picked a couple of places out of a travel book but dont know if there is something that is really good to go to and might miss it as there seems to be loads to see.

Also is the food and beer really that cheap? What the average you would pay for a main meal in an average food place.

thanks for any help or replies

|||

read the reviews of the hotel on the reviews section under %26#39;prague hotels%26#39; - there is one review from october. City club hotel is about 15 minutes walk from metro ip pavlova. to get there, take the 119 bus to metor dejvicka, the green line metro to muzeum and then change for the red line metro one stop to ip pavlova. Buy a 3 or 7 day public transport ticket at the airport to include this journey, as you will need public transport every day from the hotel to the city.

If you eat in neighbourhood restaurants, you can have a 2 course meal for 10 pounds or so with beer

Reservations at Cowboys or Kampa Park

Hi all,

We have booked to go to Prague on the 18th December for 4 nights (lastminute.com deal). On the 20th it is my birthday, and I would like to go to either Cowboys or Kampa Park to celebrate. We were going to book it when we go to Prague but now I am worried we%26#39;ll have left it too late, with Christmas being near etc. Is it worth booking now, or sorting it on the 18th? Also, I read on several posts here about a free ride home- is that when it%26#39;s asked for, or for large parties?

Thanks in advance. I%26#39;m so excited already!!

Gemma

|||

On a weekday evenings, Kampa should be able to be booked even the day before so you are not too late. Kampa is a better restaurant than Cowboys.

BMW offer only available in November

|||

Thanks Peb. I will probably book the week before we go.

This may sound silly but I%26#39;m gonna ask it anyway, is the dress code at Kampa quite formal? The thing that was drawing me to cowboys was that it looked slightly more %26#39;relaxed%26#39;. That%26#39;s probably not the right word but I hope you know what I mean.

Shame about the BMW :( That would have been very cool on my birthday!

|||

Smart casual is perfectly acceptable at kampa - you don%26#39;t even need a jacket or equivalent for ladies. Some people do dress up more smartly but if you don%26#39;t, there are no problems

|||

I would still ask about the BMW ride when you get there. We were there two weeks ago...the manager just walked up to our table and offered us a ride....The car is theirs so I would think they would want to use it rather than just have the driver sit there. There were just the two of us. I booked the reservation online and got a response that same day. Like in the US...the resturant may be busy because of holiday parties and etc. They were full when we dined there. My friend and I had on slacks..dressy tops and we were just fine...the younger woman next to me had on a pretty black and white dress. We were planning to dress up even more but never made it back to the hotel to change clothes...too much to see! I would like to try Cowboys in the summer...their outdoor terrace looked great.

|||

We went to Cowboy%26#39;s for the terrace in the summer. It is great, but the food is disappointing for the prices they charge. The steaks look cheap, but they are small and everything is an extra. Adds up quick.

|||

We booked Kampa Park about 3 weeks before as there was no harm in doing so. Did it via e-mail and got the confirmation back the same day. It wasn%26#39;t too busy though when we got there, probably about three quarters full. Still, no reason not to book ahead.

We dressed up a little smarter.....me in a red dress with ridiculous heels and my husband in a pair of smart trousers and smart shirt - no tie or jacket though.

There was a mix of smart and smart casual the night we were threre.

The Kampa Park Riverside terrace is less formal than the main restaurant.

Lisa

|||

The Kampa Park terrace - is it in use during the winter or is it just a summer thing ? We like informal dining on holiday and the menu looks good. Will be in Prague 14 December for 4 days. Thanks for any info.

|||

the terrace by the river is closed in and is heated and so is in use all year (unless there is so much snow that you, or the waiters can%26#39;t get down the steps to it - we have no snow at present).

|||

Thanks for that - doesn%26#39;t look like snow yet for Prague according to the BBC weather forecast (unless there is a big drop in temperature next week).

monastery garden hotel !!!!!!!

hi

me and my partner are thinking about staying in this hotel sometime in january 07 it will be our first time in prague and so we were wondering

1) whats the location like ? is it close to any attractions or far away from most of them ?

2)are there any nearby restaurants or pubs??

any replies will be much appreciated thanks xx

|||

monastery garden hotel is by the strahov monastery above the castle. It is 15 minutes walking distance to the castle, but for the old town, you may want to buy a number of 14 crown tram tickets, especially to avoid the uphill walk. The strahov monastery itself has a good brewery inside it which also serves hearty food

New Years Eve in Prague

We will be in Prague with children 10 and 12 for New Years Eve 2008. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do or where to make reservations for New Years with children?

Thank you!

|||

midnight fireworks are really spectacular, but the crowds and the unofficial fireworks let off on the streets can be a bit frightening. Watching from the castle gardens or on cechuv bridge by the intercontinental are quieter places than some of the popular spots. Because most of the restaurants have special new years eve menus (meaning expensive), you would be better to eat your main meal in the lunchtime or in mid afternoon

Looks like not so cold as in previous Decembers, but will still take lots of warm clothing

balmy temperatures today - 11 degrees. No snow in sight. Forecast says no lower than 5 degrees over the next few days, but it does feel a bit chilly in the evening. Will probably rain, so bring something waterproof or a brolly

going back to prague in february, arriving on a monday going home on the friday so we were wondering what nightclubs are busy if any during the week or if it was only weekends they got busy? if anybody can help could i please get info aswell on the clubs eg: location, cost of beer, spirits and entry and what sort of music the club plays? thanks.

www.pragueexperience.com has some general information about the nightclubs in prague. It is surprising how busy they are during the week. If a nightclub appears dead, the entry fees aren%26#39;t that high for you to just leave and go to another one

U Zlatých nůžek Hotel-Any good?

U Zlatých nůžek is listed on our timehshare list of places to stay. Anyone tell me about this hotel and if it would be worth staying there?

Thank you.

|||

look at the 7 reviews of the hotel on the reviews section of this site under %26#39;Prague hotels%26#39;. They are all good. The hotel is well situated in a quiet location

|||

Hi

We stayed at this hotel in October and I must say I was a little disapointed.

It%26#39;s location is excellent, just a couple of steps away from the Charles Bridge, and the room we had was excellent.

But maybe it was the lack of a decent breakfast, or no lifts. I%26#39;m not altogether sure, but I did not particularly enjoy this hotel.

We met some people at breakfast who had a standard room and it was positively pokey, we had a superior room with a view of the square.

The staff were kind of disinterested, not unhelpful really, but they didn%26#39;t put themselves out either. Reception was sometimes closed during the day and early evening.

I wish I could be more specific.

Dining near the National Marionette Theatre

My wife and I are seeing %26#39;Don Giovanni%26#39; at the National Marionette Theatre over Christmas. We%26#39;re staying at the Renaissance Hotel and was hoping for some dining locations either close to the hotel or the theatre.

Thanks!

|||

many people say kogo in slovansky dum very near the Renaissance is good for dining - I don%26#39;t personally subscribe to that view having been poisoned in both of my last two visits. The Czech pub in the Renaissance is also good and open late.

National Marionette theatre is very touristy - you may feel that you have wasted money after about 5 minutes and wished you had gone to see the real opera

|||

We went to the Marionette theater and thought it was fun entertainment....went to the Opera too...cannot even compare the two events...I would do both if you can. There were so many resturants around that area that you can won%26#39;t have a problem.

|||

You already have one of Pragues top restaurants at the hotel (called Seven). Ask your hotel to direct you to Dlouha which has 3 or 4 quite nice places to eat for dinner. I%26#39;d go for Dahab or Lary Fary.

Jason

|||

Hi

If you haven%26#39;t paid for the tickets yet then I would give this show a swerve. Like black light theatre it really is touristy rubbish.

The real opera is fantastic, we%26#39;ve been to two in Prague and they were both absolutely wonderful.

We%26#39;ve also been to the marionette theatre and watching puppets and their handlers, you can see the puppeteers, joggle about to poorly recorded tracks is not worth the money.

Jackie

|||

Sure the Marionette Theater and Black Light are touristy but we still enjoyed them. There was something very unique and charming about sitting on those benches watching the marionettes with several local little children in the audience laughing...it wasn%26#39;t expensive and something I have not seen at home. The Opera was in a different class ...and was so well done...if you can only do one event go to the Opera.

|||

Hi all, we have already paid for the tickets... However, they were an incredible bargain and giving the way most all are panning the theatre, would the Praha Mozart Concerts at the Municipal Hall be a decent substitute?? %26#39;Rusalska%26#39; is playing at the State Opera and %26#39;La clemenza de tito%26#39; is at the The Theatre of the Estates while we are there. We are going to the Vienna symphony a few nights later for Beethoven...

|||

Hi, I booked the tickets of %26#39;The Nutcracker%26#39; Ballet on 28th December at National Theatre. It%26#39;s different from National Marionette Theatre, I suppose.I regret I don%26#39;t book it earlier. All %26#39;The Nutcracker%26#39; shows are full in December and January and some tickets at %26#39;galerie%26#39; , %26#39;balkón%26#39; can be so cheap and of good value. Now I purchase the tickets of 830kc, still not very expensive for a first class ballet performance.

I am with my husband and a 7 year old boy who is a musician. He learns many classic paino pieces , Nutcracker, Carmen, Blue Danube.I want to enlight him with something he knows. Carmen the opera may be boring and we don%26#39;t uderstand czech and French.Any suggestion, puppet show, black shadow...... etc

Also we will have an early dinner before watching The Nutcracker.Any suggestions for some dining locations, we will stay in Old Town, the Karlova apartment.

Thanks.

|||

you may find the mozart concerts a bit touristy. Any concert which has period dress should be avoided.

|||

Hi Creamy

My son is also a classical musician, when he was about 9 he went to an opera with another family and was completely bowled over. He demanded to know why I had never introduced him to opera before.

He%26#39;s almost 22 now, part of an award winning string quartet and piano trio, and he still loves classical music.

So I would happily recomend taking a small child who is interested to the opera, at least you wont be accused of not introducing him early enough.

Jackie

|||

peb7,

Thanks.

Jackie,

Thanks. The opera performed at our period of stay are sold out. But I will certainly take your advice and introduce my son to the show when we return home.

Decin

Does anyone recommend stopping in Decin for a night between Dresden and prague (in late December)?

|||

no - one of the grimmest places on the planet, especially in winter. Dresden to Prague by train takes only 3 hours or so

|||

Thanks peb, for your frank reply. Are there any worthwhile stops on the train route from Dresden to Prague? What about Bad Schonau?

Zittau, a bit out of the way, but interesting? (at December)?

|||

I would not bother stopping betwenn Prague and Dresden, safe the time for these two beautiful cities...

|||

I liked Hrensko though, I only saw the bus station and train station in Decin.

Christmas Markets

Hi

I will be in Prague for the first time 16-18th of December and relly want to visit the Christmas markets. I read on an earlier post that one of the markets closes at 7pm. Is this the case for all of them? I was thinking it would be like Brussels where the market is open at night so you can get a bit of food and some gluhwein at the market rather than go out for a meal (I%26#39;m on a tight budget). Does anyone know what time the markets are on until please?

Also, how many markets are there and which are the best?

Thanks

TB

|||

all markets are open til 7pm weekdasys. At weekends, the christmas market in the old town sqaure closes at 8pm. It is normally too cold for poeple to man the markets all night.

old town sqwaure market (which has the best setting) is a lot better than in previous years - they have got rid of a lot of the tourist tat and have better food stands - if you are on a budget, you may find that the cumulative cost of nibbles at the christmas market comes to more than a meal at a local restaurant.

|||

Are the Christmas markets likely to close early on Christmas Eve (as this is really their Christmas Day)?

If so, what kind of time?

Thanks

|||

on christmas eve, midnight mass is held in the old town square at about 9pm, so the christmas markets stay open later (but of course don%26#39;t serve gluwien in the middle of christmas mass)

|||

Do the markets still sell %26#39;tourist tat%26#39; as well as the food/wine etc? I enjoy looking at it, and some of them sell things make nice gifts for those at home.

Gemma

|||

Yes. Non-Christmas tourist stuff is on sale and is, in fact, a fairly large part of the market. There are, of course, many stands selling glass and wooden Christmas ornaments and other holiday/winter related items.

prague on the cheap

Just returned from Prague and didnt find it as cheap as people say. Loved the place and are thinking of going back quite soon but would like to know if anybody knows any cheap bars,cafes and restaurants in the Old Town and Little Quarter areas as think we may have been going to the wrong places. Is it only cheap if you drink beer ? as we are more of spirit drinkers but didnt find these too cheap. Thought Prague may just have been catching up with rest of Europe price wise. Def go back though as brill place.

|||

There are a lot of tourist places that charge an arm and a leg. But the local pubs and restaurants are cheaper. Certainly we are catching up with the rest of Europe big time. Why don%26#39;t you ask before your next visit, as things change quickly here and what is there today must not be there tomorrow.

|||

The %26quot;local %26quot; bars and restaurants are mostly cheap and good quality for food and drink but you have to know where to go as some will rip you off!

I recommend you check www.classiccitybrew.com/prague. I was in Prague last week and found their recommendations excellent value. However, with one dishonourable exception: U Milosrdnych, should be avoided (no 12 in the street of the same name in the old town). I was there with my wife last Thursday. A pleasant enough evening was spoiled when the nicey-nicey waiter brought the bill-20% had been added on to everything!!! Of course I questioned it, but he just smiled and said %26quot;sevice%26quot; . As I said , I was with my wife who didn%26#39;t want any fuss especially as the bar was full of locals, so we just had to pay.(the irony was I would have given a tip of nearly as much anyway)

Avoid U Milosrdnych bar.

|||

We had good experiences at %26quot;local%26quot; pubs...we would note the daily special usually written on a blackboard outside the door...good and cheap...compared to US liquor prices we were pleasantly suprised. Had a bottle of wine at Kampa Park for 18 Euros...that would not happen where I live at that quality of resturant.

|||

Hey, what kind of prices were you paying for food and drink?

did you find any nice places to eat dinner (dress up)?

also, i remember you posted about the clothes situation when in prague, what did you take with you and wear according to the weather?

glad you had a fab time, i can%26#39;t wait to go!

|||

go to the restaurant in the passage opposite bila labut department store on na porici street (just east of the old otwn) if you want prague on the cheap. Set three course meal for 79 crowns (less than 2 pounds)

|||

There were a lot more resturants than we expected...we did make advance reservations at Kampa Park which was great...although we would have been happy at many others. We brought warm stylish clothes because that is how my friend and I like to dress...we each had a Burberry wool coat ( not planned )...black pants or jeans, sweaters, scarves and we fit right in. Shoes were important as the cobblestones are very uneven so I think heels would have easily gotten caught. Back to the resturant ...one night we just stopped in at a pub and had the best time...great beer, atmosphere, people and food...we think we had the best time at that type of resturant.

|||

Food prices...At Kampa Park..we each paid about 70 euros...that was for appetizer, entree, dessert, and a bottle of wine...The pubs were about 10 euros max. We liked having hot chocolate at one of the outdoor cafes that surrounded the Old Town Square...they had outdoor heaters...great people watching!

Prague or Brussels and amsterdam?

Help... I%26#39;m planinng a trip to Europe on march, 2007. It will be a 12 day trip - 4 days in London and 5 in Paris. So I have three days left. I%26#39;m deciding between Prague and Brussels/Amsterdam. It%26#39;s my first time in Europe. What should I do?

|||

too early in march for the dutch bulbfields, otherwise amsterdam would have has a distinct advantage as it is nearer paris (brussles really doesn%26#39;t have anything to see apart from the central square and european parliament - which you now can%26#39;t get anywhere near. without the bulbfields, I would come to prague

|||

Thanks a lot for the tips...

I Know you%26#39;re a %26quot;Prague expert%26quot; but between Prague and Berlin what would be your suggestion?

|||

Prague every day of the week and twice on Sundays!!!

Berlin is great and the Berlinners very friendly but for beauty Prague is No1.

|||

Forgive me, but Berlin is mostly ugly. You can still feel the void created by the war damage and the wall.

|||

PRAGUE PRAGUE PRAGUE

A world of its own.

Amsterdam is fun too. I would skip Berlin.

Hotel 987Design Prague Hotel

We are visiting Prague for the first time on the 15th. Dec. for a long weekend. We are booked in to The 987 Design Prague Hotel.

Has anyone stayed at this hotel?

Any suggestions on tours that we might take ?

Any ideas on temperatures at this time of year ?

Would appreciate any info.

Many thanks.

|||

The location of the hotel is great though noisy because of traffic. The rooms are small and the bathrooms even smaller, like a box. The basin is in the room not the bathroom.

|||

read the 27 mixed reviews of the hotel on the hotel reviews section under %26quot;prague hotels%26quot;. Tramline goes right by the hotel all night, so as martina says, if you get the wrong room, you may have difficulty sleeping

|||

Many thanks Martina %26amp; Peb.

Expect we will be cramming so much in ,that we will sleep through most noises!!

Read through the comments on hotel. Amazing how wildly they vary.

Maybe its the frame of mind in which you approach it ?

Will let you have our comments on our return.

Rojotourist.

Prague - then where?

We are going to Prague in May 07

We are thinking of staying 4 -5 days (is that enough time?) then heading somewhere else on the train. Any suggestions? We were thinking Vienna but I%26#39;m open to suggestions. Thanks in advance for all input.

|||

If you don%26#39;t mind a 4 1/2 hour train ride, think about a trip to Berlin. It%26#39;s an unbelievably vibrant city with tons of things to see and do. Lots of history and great restaurants. I think four to five days in Prague is an adequate amount of time to see most of the major sites, but it%26#39;s such a neat city you%26#39;ll want to come back a second time and really explore it in more detail. Have a great trip.

|||

think I would be looking towards POLAND.

|||

I suggest you Vienna or Budapest. I%26#39;ve never been in Vienna (it%26#39;s my dream city, I hope I could go sometime) but I%26#39;ve been in Budapest and it%26#39;s a dream city in general. It%26#39;s more than beautiful!

Think about it!

|||

Berlin is fabulous! The newly created island of museums is a must. And you can visit Dreden on the way...

|||

Hi

I would go to Bratislava, it is a delightful city. Not too big but with lots of beautiful buildings, very interesting sculptures all over the town centre and a brilliant cafe life, oh and it%26#39;s very cheap too.

Budapest after Prague would be too big a disappointment, but if you chose Bratislava you could have a day in Vienna travelling on the Twin City Liner, which is a fab experience in itself.

Jackie

|||

i would go for vienna - steer clear of poland. The twin city liner trip that Jackie says is a hydrofoil that runs between the two cities - city centre to city centre. It is not cheap, but the river trip is fabulous and a day in Bratislava is all you need

|||

I%26#39;m doing Berlin, Dresden, Prague, 3 days in each, by train...

I heard Krakow Poland area is very interesting and cheaper, but never have been there...

|||

i went to krakow about a month ago

although i stayed only one day i was amazed by the city.

i think the greatest part is protected by unesco

i recommend it to any one but i think is a little to far from prague. my first option whould be berlin

|||

If I have 24 hours to spend between Dresden and Prague in December, what is an easy place to get to, spend a night and have interesting things to see? I%26#39;ll be with my son, a teenaged boy. A day of skiing would be nice for him.

|||

you can do a days skiing in the krkonose mountains which are less than 3 hours from prague. buses leave regularly from cerny most metro station. Don%26#39;t know how long you are staying in dresden or prague, but most of the places i visit, I always think, if only I had an extra day ... I would use that extra day either in prague or dresden

Good eating places lunch and night neat to K + K Central

There are so many postings listing so many different places for lunch and dinner etc, so can someone offer me up a quick overview that I can work from. I am staying over New Year at K + K central and want to eat local to there (Old Town Square etc) on the Saturday night and somewhere for Sunday and Monday lunch. Nice atmoshere and cosy and local cuisine but not too expensive. Also some good cosy bars in the area that are not plastic, theamed, piped music, international drinking establishments! Sorted New Year out at Kampa Park Restaurant so I have started to save now!!!

|||

Close by is Slovansky Dum with Kogo (mediterranian food), a Sushi place, Cafe Pavlina with great cake and sweets and Ambiente Brasiliano, all you can eat with or without meat, very reasonable.

|||

down dlouha street are a number of good restaurants (danico, larry fary and L%26#39;Angolo.

Many people rave about kogo, but I have eaten there twice in the last 2 weeks and both times have needed to take the next day off work through food poisoining

guard your purse, hold it tight !! No matter where you are !

Howdi, am back from Prague and it was delightful, beautiful amazing place, wonderful people, I%26#39;m in awe,

even tho my purse was stolen, right out of a pub , I had been on a pub crawl with Prauge Experience, tour guide named Andy, orange umbrella,

we had visited the 3rd pub, there wasn%26#39;t a place really to set my purse, so I put it on one empty chair next to me, than put my long winter coat over that, there was about six of us at the table, I got up to go to the bathroom, I was gone 2-3 mintues, my husband and table was approached by an Asian looking girl selling flowers, she leaned very near the table, put these flowers down, they didn%26#39;t really know what was going on, than they got that she was selling them, they all told her no and she took them back, she apparently was used as a distraction so while all eyes were on her, someone carefully snatched my purse from under the coat on the empty chair, with my passport , drivers license, credit card, $500 and my digital camera, and 3 sentimental items that were charms I never leave home without, ( virgin mary, small gold anchor, etc.) they have no $$ value but meant alot to me, the little charm of Mary had been blessed by the pope, gift from my best friend since childhood, we looked all over , could not find it, we had the pub call the police, a pub called something with %26quot;rabbit%26quot; ?? the police came, and i have to tell u something that I thought was strange, the bartender/waiters were asked by us, %26quot;who are these people u let in here? u don%26#39;t know who comes in to your customers? do u know this girl? they got kind of huffy, said no english or something like that, but not nice ??

if I owned a restaurant, I know I would be sure that if some stranger comes in, ( not to eat or drink) I would certainly know who they are , or what they are about, because if they harm my customers, it would drive my business away,

but back to the story........ the police took us for a bit of a ride, to see if we could spot this girl, we didn%26#39;t, than they took us to the police station, we had to wait for an interpretor, a very very nice woman finally came, we told her everthing , a formal report was written up, which she translated , I dont%26#39; know if it will do any good but we followed procedure, these police and interpretor were very good to us, they got the American Embassy on the phone for me, I was very concerned because I was due to leave Prague the next day for Berlin at 1 p.m. and had no identification at all !

Got to the American Embassy the next morning first thing !! They were wondeful, God Bless them ! I had a new temporary passport in 1- 1/2 hours, I asked them have you ever seen this before where an item gets stolen right out of a restaurant?? and they said yes, EVERY DAY ! I told them that on the street, I had guarded that purse with my life , held it tight and in front of me, with my hand over the zipper, but in the pub with a group I truly thought my purse was safe , they stole it right in front a table of six and no one even saw it happen, not even my husband,

so lesson learned for me, I consider it my fault.

#1 , dont%26#39; carry a purse and if I do, only essentials in there, the rest will go in a hotel safe, or in a belt under my clothes, I just want to warn you ladies, please don%26#39;t sit your purse down , not even for a second, even if it is in a very nice pub and sitting 12 inches from you, somehow these thieves are watching and they are good, like magicians the embassy told me,

I will always love Prague and I would go back tomorrow if I could,

( this time a bit wiser ) it%26#39;s a beautiful place and wonderful people and has much to offer, I%26#39;ll be back ! :)

|||

What an awful experience, thanks for the warning.

|||

hi, sorry about your experience

same thing happened to us new years day in the castle grounds watching the changing of the guard, my wife lifted her arm to take a photo and the purse was gone, she is sure it was a little girl standing alongside her that done it, in the police station all nationalities were there reporing thefts, really upset us, and the added inconvenience of sorting out money,credit cards and driving licence. left a horrid taste in the mouth, but still love prague

lot has been said on these pages about pickpockets and people think it will never happen to them but it can so be careful

|||

worse part is that I usually don%26#39;t travel carrying a pocketbook but so many ladies had them, my own fault tho all the way, go with your gut feeling, it%26#39;s always right,

do u think the pub ? tour ? had something to do with this? am I being to suspicious ??? one%26#39;s mind can really start thinking crazy things, I just can%26#39;t get over the fact that they let people in --- going up to all their customers tables and they don%26#39;t know who they are?

or that they are thieves? and were they the ones who did it?

life%26#39;s big mystery !

|||

know how you feel, what if i had done this different or what if i had done that different, they say prague and other cities are full of opportunist thieves and pickpockets. weird thing is wife blamed herself for leting it happen and lots of people write in with good advice , but if you are targeted in metro etc, have heard tales of groups surrounding people, it is very scary, advice i think is take out only the money you need for the day, do not take credit cards etc unless you need them, notebooks etc only if you need them

dave

|||

It is quite common in European cities for flower sellers and other people like that to come into cafes and restaurants to try and sell their wares. Some will be honest, others not. Whilst in Salzburg we had a whole troupe of singers come into a restaurant and my first instinct was to grab my bag and keep it on my lap. I think the only advice to follow is take the least amount of stuff out with you, say some cash and 1 credit card only, and use the hotel safe if there is one for passports, however they are not always thief proof.

A friend of mine had her bag stolen whilst it was lodged between her feet under a cafe table in Amsterdam, she didn%26#39;t feel a thing. When you are on holiday you get caught up with the sightseeing, having fun etc. and you are not always sufficiently on your guard.

Thanks for your timely reminder on all this. I think someone saw you put your bag under your coat and came to take it a short while after when you went to the bathroom ...just a thought

|||

I would say guard ALL of your bags. I had a camera bag over my shoulder and a guy came to ask me for directions. Now, I%26#39;m obviously not a Czech person (very American looking black man) so I knew something was up. As I began to look away, I saw him glance at my camera and pocket. I spun and saw his accomplice behind me and then the man cut the strap and tried to run with the camera bag. I was hot on his heels and tripped him then dove on him. He banged his face on the sidewalk and was smashed and bleeding but I got my camera. THe police were there within one minute but people saw what happened and told the police. The guy got arrested. Bad experience. I was glad I got my camera and a nice group of older Czech ladies helped me calm down. One of their husbands bought me a beer and absinth. (Absinth. LOL. Never will I try THAT again!! LOL).

I wouldn%26#39;t recommend what I did to all and before I realized it, I was on top of the guy. I don%26#39;t have alot of money so what I have I will fight for, not just give away.

|||

you were really brave, but would not advise any one else to do that as the police do not always fall on the side of the tourist, and if you have no witnesses there could be trouble

|||

Very true. But then again, are you supposed to just let someone take off when you see them 5 feet away from you as they try to gain speed? I think, if the lady who started this thread saw the woman lift her bag, she would%26#39;ve pulverized her if she had to, or at least ran over and snatched it back. Next time, I might approach it differently but no one stopped to help me. It was my camera and I%26#39;ve heard of horror stories that the police barely helped some who have been robbed.

I think alot of us here would likely protect our belongings, even if it meant running someone down to get it back, if we could. I%26#39;m sure not too many people who have been robbed have gotten their stuff back. And again, I don%26#39;t condone what I did.

|||

In response to your thoughts are the pub in on the theft.

I was in Barcelona a couple of years ago. My friends and I were in a back street pub just off Las Ramblas watching a football match there was about 8 of us. Whilst watching the match one of the women noticed her bag had been stolen. When we remonstrated to the bar owner about how much we had spent in his bar and the fact that we were practically the only ones in there he got a bit agitated.

After some more proding from ourselves he sent one of his staff out and about half an hour later he returned with the bag. The only thing missing was about £200 cash. We obviously had our suspicions but were glad her passport and credit cards were intact.

Cheers

Dave

Ive recently visited Prague with 3 lady friends we were pleasantly surprised how safe we felt . I think you have to use your commmon sense when going in tourist areas, e.g. every one was so intent on watching the Clock in the old town square it was a pick pockets dream. As I had seen it numerous times I did not watch it but watched the people instead, ther e was a bunch of very well dress men not interested in the clock but eying the crowd to me it was obvious they were up to no good.

Last year when I went with my husband who thinks he is street wise we went shopping in the large local market north of the river, he came out of a shop put his small purse in his buttoned knee/leg pocket then we got on a tram. We had to stand when we got off at the other end his purse was gone and he had not felt a thing even though it was buttoned up only had £50 in it but it learnt him a lesson.

I love Prague and would not be out off by all this talk of pickpockets etc its what you expect to find in any large city in the world.

Europe New Years: where to go?

Hello there,

We (my wife and myself: late 20s) are planning a trip to Europe over the new years. We have researched a bit and following are our top choices:

1. Prague: heard a lot about it.

2. London

3. Paris

We like lively cities with public fireworks and celebrations. We would like to go dancing, nice food, great people etc. Yes, we like modern luxury and like to live in a nice modern hotel. New years in NYC was the best I have ever had (at a great club) so far, it that helps.

Please comment.....

|||

Paris has no fireworks. London has better fireworks than Prague, but not the setting and not too many places you can watch them. Prague is more dangerous. Edinburgh is the best place in Europe for Hogmany

|||

yes PEB is spot on as usual.

Of course I am biased when it comes to Edinburgh,but we do have the finest Hogmanay celebrations in Europe.This year I am going to the Ceilidh in the Gardens.

http://www.edinburghshogmanay.org/

for information.

word of warning Hotel rooms are at a premium at this time of year even more so than during the Edinburgh Festival.

|||

Spot on guy%26#39;s

Edinburgh is No.1 for Hogmany

Cheers

Davie

|||

sorry,but no spare beds at my place.

|||

Had the best New Year%26#39;s Eve ever in Edinburgh - great atmosphere, cold, loads of people on the streets, everyone really friendly, the Scots do New Year like no-one else I know; London is full of drunk people; Prague is full of atmosphere, very cold and is pretty mental with lots of Euro tourists firing rockets left right and centre. Depends what you fancy.....

|||

I also liked New Year%26#39;s in Rome a lot, I celebrated above the Spanish Steps where you can see the fireworks very good. There were loads of people from all over the world.

|||

I%26#39;ve been in belgrade last couple of days. I%26#39;m sure it isn%26#39;t anywhere like Edinburgh, but people after people I have met have recommended new years eve there.

Just returned

Myself %26amp; 7 girlfriends had a fantastic few days in Prague. We stayed at Miss Sophies hostel - more like a hotel. Banditos Mexican restaurant is excellent as is the Molotow cocktail bar and the Pivorsky-dum micro brewery both nearby. There is a fantastic Vegetarian restaurant on Borsov near the river - beautiful inside. We used the prague-airport-shuttle.com and they were very good, I can highly recommend them. Prague is beautiful. Thanks to all the experts for posting very useful information which helped us immensly.

Glad you enjoyed it!!! Prague is my fav place too. Can%26#39;t fail to have a good time there, in my opinion. Going back myself in just over a week, and hoping for a little snow - well you never know.

|||

Welcome back!

Also, thank you for the good recommendations.

|||

I booked the Prague airport shuttle myself for an upcoming trip on Nov. 15th...got an immediate response and I liked the photo they emailed to show us exactly where to find the shuttle. Can%26#39;t wait!

|||

That%26#39;s great to hear, I%26#39;m also gonna stay at Miss Sophie%26#39;s. It looks so pretty on their website! Is the location good?

|||

miss sophies is in a quiet neighbourhood with good transport connections to the centre. You will need public transport every day, so buy a multiple transport ticket at the airport before you leave

warning about exchanging money and other advices

We are just returned from Praque and want to tell how foolish we were about changing Euro. We went to a bank at Wencelas Square but we would not pay 9,9% in commission because we had seen lot of signboards with %26quot;no commission%26quot;. So we went to such a place, but what we had not seen was that they give a very low rate for amounts less than 15.000 czk. So we got only 21,34 czk for 1 Euro. It has been better to pay the commission, because the rate in the bank was about 26. Some days later we were in the supermarket Tesco. There was an advertisement that they would give 27 czk for 1 Euro. I do not think that they have commission, but I am not sure. Later we used our Visa card, and we can see now, that it was a better way to have czk. So do not think that you will save money in the offices with %26quot;no commission%26quot;

Some other advice:

If you want a guided tour in the Jewish quarter it is cheaper to go to the Maisel synagogue and buy tickets and a guided tour there than it is to buy a package tour. The price for overall tickets was 490 czk plus 40 for the guide.

About transport. We used CEDAS, which was cheaper than the offer from the hotel. We paid 880 czk for two for transport both into the city and back to the airport. But when we were going to the airport the car had a delay at 15 minutes - because of the traffic he said-, so do not return in the last moment! When we were in Laterna Magica we took a taxi even though we had seen many warnings against taxis in Praque. The hotel ordered the taxi for us through AAA , and we had no problems, and it was cheap. We paid 120 czk from our hotel, which was near the national museum.

Something more. We can recommend The Stats Opera. We were sitting on the second balcony row 3. It was cheap, and we could easily see everything (we saw Rusalka, it was a very fine performance, but have not heard the music before, so I regret a little that we had not chosen one we knew). Laterna Magica was also a good experience, and what we also enjoyed was a concert in St. Nicolai church at The Old Town Square. The acoustics is just fantastic there.

Enjoy Praque! There is a lot to see.

|||

buying something small in tesco in euros and receiving the change back in crowns has long been one of the cheapest ways of exchanging money in prague

More time in Prague or Budapest

We are traveling to Prague, Budapest and on to Croatia. We are trying to figure out how much time in Prague versus Budapest. Right now we are thinking 2 nights Prague (3 full days), sleeper car to Budapest and then 4 nights (4 full days) Budapest. Or, 3 nights Prague and 3 Budapest? Help! I can%26#39;t make up my mind!!

We%26#39;re hoping to catch a flight from Budapest to Dubrovnik. The problem is that we aren%26#39;t going until September 2007 (I know, it is killing me!). From what I can tell, it is too early to book the sleeper train and a flight from Budapest to Dubrovnik. Am I wrong?

I%26#39;m having so much fun reading all the advice. I wish I was going NOW!

|||

Two nights are not enough for a good look at the prettiest city in Europe, I think. I don%26#39;t think you have to book now, I would wait until half a year before traveling.

|||

Prague is in my opinion much nicer and beautiful than Budapest. Therefore I would spend more time there than in Budapest! I´,m from Madrid and live in Vienna and I think Prague is the most beautiful City in Europe!

|||

I love Budapest (not been to Prague yet- only 12 days to go, woo!) but I would say you need 3 days in Budapest, to see and do it all it has to offer. I think its a lovely city, steeped in history and character. Therefore I would have 3 days in each.

Hope this helps.

Gemma

|||

We spent 4 nights last month in Prague and wish we had had one more!

|||

Both cities are equally beautiful (OK I think Budapest is a little prettier).

However, Budapest has more to see than Prague, I%26#39;ve stayed there 4 days and they weren%26#39;t enough.

In Prague 4 days was enough and we%26#39;ve also made an excursion at Karlovy Vary.

The decision is yours.

Have a really nice trip

|||

We are retuning to Prague for a 3rd time this Christmas, we were in Budapest once so we prefer Prague.

|||

An Hungarian friend, who is in travel business once said to me: I must admit, Prague has everything that Budapest has, but better. And more.

I share that opinion.

|||

Thanks so much for your replies. I think we%26#39;ll keep our plans the way they are.

When is a good time to reserve a sleeper car from Prague to Budapest?

|||

cheaper to buy the ticket here. Buy them when you arrive. One or two days in advance is normally sufficient unless it is holiday time

|||

akcent (not ackant) hotel is newly built and in smichov. It has good metro and tram connections to the centre, so you will need to buy a 7 day transport pass (easiest is from the airport). jet Set on radlicka street is a good place to eat nearby

andel's hotel & suite

I%26#39;ll visit Prague next month, and I just can%26#39;t decide which hotel to select. I%26#39;ll travel with two friends.

Andel%26#39;s Hotel tells me that we can get a double room with an extra bed or get one-bedroom suite. Would anyone who stayed at Andel%26#39;s Hotel tell me if we would have enough space if we have an extra bed in the double room? If there is not much space there, we may have to get an one-bedroom apartment at Andel%26#39;s Suite (different from Andel%26#39;s Hotel).

Or would you suggest looking for an apartment at much cheaper rate?

|||

I would expect the suite to be bigger than a double room

|||

For ease of sightseeing, and to keep costs down to allow more money to be spent in bars and restauarants I always book an apartment in the Mala Strana area beneath the castle as opposed to paying for a hotel. Aprtments on the whole tend to be about 30-40% cheaper.

The Mala Strana area below the castle is very picturesque and old world, quiet at night and less busy than Wenceslas Sq area, but still only 10 mins away from the Charles Bridge and is in my opinion a more prettier area than down at Andel%26#39;s. Although the hotel itself is very modern and clean.

The only thing to bear in mind with the Mala Strana area is that it can be an uphill walk home after a night out the closer you stay to the castle.

|||

uphill walks are a very good way of sobering out

Seats in the State Opera House

Help. I am hoping to book Die Fledermaus for Fri 29th December in the State Opera House. I am using the web site bohemia tickets which shows available seats. I am thinking of Seats 80 %26amp; 81 of Row 7 in the 1st Balcony - are these good seats or would I get better.

The opera starts at 19.00 and is for 2 hours - would I be giving myself enough time booking dinner for 9.30 or would we be better gonig for dinner first

Any help would be appreciated

Marcolet

|||

Hi

I just checked out the unsold seats on Ticket Portal for this opera and I couldn%26#39;t see any on row 7 of the first balcony. There are a few seats on row 6 1st Balcony and 3 seats in the stalls, so if I was you I would get booking fast.

We had a real problem eating out after visiting the opera earlier this year as everywhere stopped taking orders at about 10.15pm so if I was you I would make the reservation as near as possible to the opera house for 10pm and perhaps if it is possible order your food at the same time.

Have a lovely time in Prague we always do.

Jackie

|||

Hi Jackie

Thanks for the advice - I have now booked 2 front row seats in box 21 so am looking foward to it already. I think that we might go for dinner first and a drink afterwards

Thanks again

Marcolet

|||

There is a restaurant a minute%26#39;s walk from the opera house called Zahrada v opere which stays open late (til 1am) and caters for the opera crowd. (http://zahradavopere.cz/index.html) it isn%26#39;t at all pretentious, the food is very good, and it is reasonably priced (about 20 pound per head including wine). The decor is very nice too and the changes according to the season (the English translation of the name of the restaurant is the Garden at the Opera, so it should give you some idea of what to expect). You can eat either before or after the opera - personally I prefer to go afterwards. You might want to book a table beforehand as it can get quite busy. When you come out of the opera, turn right and go behind the opera towards the main road. Then walk a little up the hill. There is a modern building on your right. The restaurant is down the steps, in the building.

|||

which website did you use to book your tickets?? i am having the darndest time booking for the state opera house -- system keeps dropping at the very end. no- not my computer :)

|||

I booked no problem with www.bohemiaticket.cz

|||

zahrada v opere is good. If want to eat after the performance, book for 10pm - then you don%26#39;t need to worry about when the opera finishes and if you arrive early, you should still have a table. You normally don%26#39;t need a reservation before the opera

|||

hi there

I also booked withi bohemia ticket and had no problem

I just emailed zahrada v opere and told them what I was going to see and they booked a table for %26#39;after the show%26#39;. No need to be specific on a time.

|||

I thought the Opera Garden restaurant, though very nice, was somewhat overpriced. The food was small portions and living part of the time in Prague, way over what we like to pay.

I prefer to eat before the performance.

Any must go Cafe?

Hi, I am going to Prague on the boxing day for four nights. Please recommend some cafes for me. l like the old style ones with high ceiling and extravagant decoration. But will also try stylish and morden ones if they are highly recommended . I wonder how should I make the order . Is it same as in Vienna? Mokka, Schwarzen, Bauner........? No idea of how much does one cafe cost? Also, any pastries recommended?Or any good cafes that I can have dinner or lunch there?

Thank you.

|||

One place we had visited quite a few times esp. for breakfast is :

www.pragueexperience.com/places.asp…

Another one that is very popular (though we didnt think it is any better) is Cafe Slavia.

The Globe was recommended but we didnt make it there.

U can also try Cafe Milena (cool posters on the walls)

Good Luck

|||

Cafe Savoy has a great ceiling and great food.

Cafe Louvre has a great interior and history, Kafka etc. Food is very Czech, reasonably priced. The best is the thick hot chocolate.

Cafe Slavia looks great but it a bit touristy.

The cafe at Obecni Dum is gorgeous art nouveau, but very touristy

|||

What about Cafe Imperial? (near namesky republic) I have read recommendations. Do the local experts recommed this one?

J

|||

Ebel Coffee house in Ungelt behind the Tyn church is quite good. Pastries are pretty standard middle European. It%26#39;s usually best to take a look at what they have on hand. Apple Strudel (generally German style) is quite popular as are berry tarts.

|||

Sahara Cafe (Nam. Miru) is my kind of place, no tourists, just one stop by metro from Wenceslas Square. Modern, calm, beautiful place to relax.. I am on my way there right now.

|||

Bohemiam Bagel

Sorry I don%26#39;t know the name of the street. About two blocks from the Ventana Hotel in Old Town . Great internet area too.. cheap.

Great food all different kinds. Extensive menu. Everything I ate there was great.

Priced right and the folks were so friendly.

|||

Cafe Imperial is a unique looking place. But I have heard tales about them treating tourists poorly (i.e. overcharging).

|||

cafe imperial is still a building site and closed. Cafes in prague are nothing like in Vienna, so don%26#39;t come with any hopes like that . I like the Ebel cafes (in Tyn, Karprova or Retezova in the old town, but they don%26#39;t have high celings.

Bohemia Bagels is a real pit - full of backpackers

|||

Was in Prague last week %26amp; stayed at the Green Garland on Retezova, as Peb says Cafe Ebel very good. Try the jumbo latte.

National Theatre gallery seats

I%26#39;m not very wealthy (wouldn%26#39;t say I%26#39;m a poor beggar, but a student sometimes feels like one) and would like to go to the ballet Onegin in january. There are gallery seats for the first and second gallery that cost a few euros.

Are these any good? Can you see the stage or is everything far, far away?

|||

first gallery is obviously better than the second. You can see the stage, but it is down below. The seats go all the way round the auditorium, so it helps if you can get a front row seat, wherever situated. Don%26#39;t book this if you suffer from vertigo

|||

Okay, thanks a lot. I%26#39;ll discuss it with my fellow traveler and then we might book some first gallery seats. The theatre looks wonderful and I think it could be a good night out.

|||

good night out and ballet don%26#39;t go together in the same sentence for me. But everyone has different tastes

|||

When I visited Prague I had never been to an opera or ballet but I went with my husband to see Aida at the State Opera House , did not understand a word of it but sat there absolutely spellbound by the theatre itself it is wonderful !! Then another time I went with my friend to the ballet at The National Theatre again it was an inforgettable exprerience not to be missed and so cheap , even if like me you wern%26#39;t keen please try them Im sure you will be impressed

|||

Nanaphyl, to me it%26#39;s also the whole atmosphere that makes it worthwhile.

|||

We saw the Nutcracker at the National Theater from what we call the %26quot;nose bleed%26quot; seats. It was not so bad -- we enjoyed the show. And the price was right.

|||

What are nose bleed seats?

|||

%26quot;nose bleed%26quot; seats derives trom the presumption that the seats are so high up that the decrease in air pressure at that altitude would cause a nose to bleed

|||

:D

I decided to go with the parter loge 9. It cost a bit more, but I%26#39;d rather pay a bit extra than to have blood dripping onto my fancy clothes...

Best time to visit Prague?

Weather-wise, what are the best months to visit?

|||

depends of course which weather you like. Summer is hottest, but some people don%26#39;t like it too hot. then again, some people like the winter and the snow

|||

Peb...what would the crowds be like in Sept or Oct. We were there a month ago and we were surprised how crowded it was...it was a weekend...is it always like that?? We never had trouble though getting into resturants and events we wanted to see...what is the population of Prague??

|||

Prague is always crowded, between November and March a little less apart from New Years. I would recommend March, as there is a possibility of nice weather and you get better deals in the hotels. In high season it is better to make reservations. The population is about 1.2 million.

|||

september and october are good, especially if as in the last two years we have had an indian summer
