Leaving Tuesday and got a few questions

Hi anyone that answers before tomorrow will be a saviour

1. Booked my airport shuttle and have not got any local currency, do the drivers take euros or should I draw some money out of the cash machine at the airport?

2. What would be the closest/safest cash machine to use near the Hotel Crystal Palace?

3. Is it the usual 2 point plug adapters I require for the UK 3 point electrical equipment?

and finally 4. I will be carrying a large digital camera with me that says expensive all over it, how safe is it to carry this around (im not too bothered but I have heard a few people moan on about pickpockets etc)

Cheers

Gav

plug are 3 round pin, (you need an earth pin too.) we bought an adaptor close to where we were staying and cheaper than they normally are in the airport. the MULTI adaptor things work, but the 2 pin wont go in without the earth.

I wouldnt stress over the camera, just be aware

Been to Prague twice. All I can say is that you should always go with the ATMs and make sure it is one that is outside of a bank or something. The airport machine may have a higher usage fee but if that is your only alternative, take that over the cash exchange places. They usually rip you off.

thanks for your advice, do you know if the ATM%26#39;s actually tell you how much they will be charging when you use them, or is it a case of a nice surprise when you receive your statement?

|||

It will be more than what your local bank would charge in your country for using another ATM but i don%26#39;t think it will be something like $10 or $20 per usage. Either way though, the exchange rate is almost exactly the rate listed for Euro to Crowns or not far off. I%26#39;m guessing it might be, in my case, about 7 or 8 usd per usage. I used ATMs three times when I was there and didn%26#39;t have a heart attack when I saw my bank statement upon return home.

I had heard about pickpockets and would either put money in my sock with a little bit in pocket to use as I walked around or I would stuff some napkins into the top of my pocket, on top of my money.

When out taking pictures, don%26#39;t get flabbergasted with whatever you are doing and let your guard down. Also, watch your pockets and such as you take pics. This is when the thieves stalk you. Also on crowded trams or other crowded, touristy areas.

|||

At one end of the baggage pickup hall, there are 4 atm machines against the wall. The rates were pretty good, although you don%26#39;t actually get to see the rate. The differences between machines are too small to worry about for the individual user.

cheers for all your input, my mind has been put to rest and I can now think about getting on that big orange plane tomorrow, cant wait!!!

Does anyone know what the traditional dish is in prague really want to try some local food, not bothered about the posh or the international just want some good local meals.

|||

atm%26#39;s in the airport are when you come past customs and on the left by the doors you will see in front of you. if you have your money on an inside coat pocket, this is sufficient - some of the scaremongering comments like having your money in your socks makes this sound like deepest Russia. A camera on a strap round your neck should be safe

As unclegus says, your home bank will make a charge for the ATM withdrawl (including the Czech bank%26#39;s charge). The charge is per withdrawl, so you are best to draw as much as you need in one go.

thanks peb, I have just been into my local bank (barclays) who have advised me there will be a 2.75% admin charge and a maximum of £4.50 for something else, so If I draw £400 out I should only get charged £15 max, I will be happy with that.

For local food would suggest a mixed grill (pork, duck, etc.) that may come with cabbage. Also, if you are a beer drinker, try the Krusovice Beer (but be warned, your local beer will probably never satisfy you again). Just returned from 6 days there, had my money hidden inside my shirt, up my sleeve, etc., but never felt threatened (but they are pros so maybe I didn%26#39;t see them because I wasn%26#39;t an easy target)

After having someone cut my camera strap and try to run off with it, I have every right to be cautious. I%26#39;ve seen others crying and distraught just after discovering they%26#39;ve been robbed, too. So excuse me.

Jeez, Peb. I must say that I admire your loyalty to your country but you act as if there aren%26#39;t precautions to be taken in Prague. When people see Western European and US citizens, some of them try to take advantage of them. I guess this doesn%26#39;t REALLY happen in your eyes though?

You are a little too surly to be a moderator. You need to calm down. I guess that reality will now get me banned from this forum now?
