In March we will be returning to Prague for the third straight year. It is definitely our favorite European city. On our first 2 trips we took 2 night side trips. Cesky Krumlov in 2005 and Kutna Hora in 2006. We loved both towns.....Cesky Krumlov was like a story book and Kutna Hora was very interesting and enjoyable. This year we will probably only have time for a 1 night side trip. We would like something that is not too difficult to get to by train.
Tabor looks interesting and seems very easy to get to. Would appreciate some comments or suggestions for other towns.

Karlovy Vary is a bit far, 2-3 hours, but one of the nicest towns to visit. Spend a night at the Grand Hotel Pupp (Park Hotel side to save money).

I would go either for Karlovy Vary which is a lovely spa town and the air is very crisp there (you can get there by direct bus every hour, and whilst it takes 2 -3 hours, as Brewsta says, this is an easy trip compared to Cesky Krumlov. Karlovy Vary also has the Becherovka and the Moser glass factory as attractiuons), or take the new fast trains to Olomouc (which is the ecclesiastical centre of the Czech Republic and I think has a better astronomical clock than the one in Prague).
If you do decide to stay in Karlovy Vary, I think the grand hotel pupp lives on reputation and the park hotel side is dire, compared with what you get at the newly refurbished hotels. Look at the best western westend or the ambassador instead - they will be cheaper and more comfortable.

You might consider the edifying and sobering half-day tour to the Nazi Gestapo prison and concentration camp at Terezin. A remarkable journey into the past.

Thank you for your suggestions and fast response. Karlovy Vary and Olomouc are certainly places I would like to visit.
I think on this trip , however, we are looking for a small /medieval type town as we have done in the past (Cesky Krumlov and Kutna Hora). Telc is one of the towns we looked at as well but is more difficult to get to.....most likely 2 buses. Tabor seems very esy to get to ( 1hr 45min) by train and the old center looks interesting.
We will think it over.
Thank you agin for the suggestions.

I did the trip to Tabor last week from Roztyly bus station, costing 67czk, we didn%26#39;t want to travel too far and this was quite a short journey, just over an hour if I remember correctly. The town centre is modern, but the Old Town is a mixture of narrow lanes and a perfect town square ( the Tourist Information Centre is in this square). There are some underground passages that you can visit.
